Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 25, 2009 5:32 pm The first wall is going up on our house. On the outside the mortar joints look "normal", i.e. the mortar appears evenly spread along/between the bricks. But on the inside there are "gaps" in the mortar.
Knowing nothing about bricklaying, other than how it "looks": could someone please tell me whether the "gaps" are o.k. or whether I should raise this with our SS. Edit: It's going to be a double-brick wall, i.e. later they will build another brick wall on the inside. The outside is fine but the inside isnt! I got a fright at first and thought the pic was of the outside!! apparently thats normal for the inside for brick veneer homes. Not sure about solid brick homes though Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! Now tackling the HUGE task of the Garden- viewtopic.php?f=31&t=14782 Re: How much mortar should there be between bricks? 3May 25, 2009 6:00 pm I just had a look at ours & our mortar goes right through, if you want to have a look on our blog click on the "Inside the kitchen" post photo & you can see it up closer. I would as your SS if you are not happy. We now have a blog. http://allaboutthebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: How much mortar should there be between bricks? 4May 25, 2009 6:42 pm It seems usual to have very uneven mortar on the back side of the brickwork, gaps, overflows etc. However, what concerns me about those pics is that the bricks look too close together ie the mortar line looks very thin......especially between horizontal courses. Could the brickies be trying to save on mortar?? I'm sure there is a relevant standard or code. Certainly raise it with the SS and demand an answer that completely satisfies your concerns. Sooner rather than later is always a good idea. Cheers zeke PS This raises a pet peeve of mine. Why aren't Australian Standards/building codes etc available on the net? As taxpayers, we should expect this. Unfortunately, they are currently only available if you are willing to pay exorbitant prices. Keeps us poor punters in mushroom land Hi Zeke - your State Library should have access to the Australian Standards database called Standards Australia by SAI Global. You can either go into your library and ask someone to show you how to access it or if you are looking for a particular part of a standard you can lodge an enquiry with your state library's online form and a librarian will go away and find what you are after and send it to you - free!!!! I know here in QLD you can have 6 x 2 hr free sessions per calendar year... not sure what state you are in? (can you tell I'm a librarian?!)... PM if you are looking for something i particular and I can take a peek for you... Alternatively, you should be able to access the BSA's volumes on Building codes/standards. I know we have it in hard copy and also an online version.
