Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 24, 2009 8:32 pm Hi there,
After months of reading and drooling on this forum, I finally signed in. And now…I can use some help! We are building NOR in Perth and have a problem with our rooftiles. We chose the colour Barramundi in Oct. last year. When we saw the tiles 2 weeks ago at the building site, we were surprised by their colour. We took one tile home, and it’s a couple of shades lighter and greener then our sample! So we went to a consultant of Monier and she admitted that the colours had been modified by the end of 2008. But…nobody told us… We’ve called the SS to say that the tiles didn’t have the right colour, but the guys still had to continue by putting the roof on, and now, everything is finished. As this is not the colour we wanted, we called Monier again, to ask if the correct tiles have been delivered. He said they are Barramundi…, like we wanted, and that the colour- difference with the old Barramundi is very small. However, they are willing to spray paint it, if we really want a darker tile. But NO new tiles. As you can see on the picture below, the old Barramundi (1) is now closer to the Sambuca (2) then to the new Barramundi (3). The tile they’ve put on the roof is nr. 4. (I have to admit it doesn’t look so green on the roof, but it makes me think it might even be the Caper…). I still like it, but don’t know if I prefer a darker roof or not. So my questions - Do you think they delivered Barramundi? - Would you prefer this colour, or the darker Sambuca (in combination with these bricks) - Would you use the offer to let the tiles be painted? What are the (dis)advantages about this, anyway. (I can’t find much about it) - Would you insist in getting new rooftiles? But what to do if the company keeps on saying NO? - Would you leave these tiles, and ask for a compensation? (But like what? And with the roof company, or the builder?) Thankyouthankyouthankyou! Bip PS. Are the pics too big? Re: Rooftiles 3May 24, 2009 9:03 pm how disappointing I would go to the Monier tile place at Homebase Expo in Subiaco. The barramundi tiles are definitely grey and a lot lighter than the sambucca ones. The tile you have on your roof definitely looks like barramundi. I'm not sure about changing the tiles or painting them. I think the colours still work and your pic of the front of the house looks great... We are having Woodland Grey gutters which matches the Barramundi, maybe you could change that if you want it to match? Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. It took us quite a long time to decide on the external colours, and when they don't turn out the way you want, it's a bit disappointing At the moment, we haven't decided yet what to do, so appreciate any more ideas/opinions of you guys! Re: Wrong rooftiles? 6May 26, 2009 1:46 am The house looks fine in the photo, very nice in fact, but I am well aware that lighting conditions can affect appearance. Looking at those tile samples it seems to me that they have changed the tile you wanted from a dark colour to a medium colour. IMO you should have been told and given the option of choosing the other darker tile. As for the greenish appearance, I know they say batches vary but is it possible for them to vary that much? It does show up quite clearly in your photo of the tile pieces, although not in your photo of the house. Can they give you some addresses nearby so you can see how other roofs look in the various colours? The one thing I would not do is allow them to spray paint the roof. Those coatings come with a warranty which to me doesn't seem very lengthy. Seven years is what I have usually heard. There has been some publicity in the media about some not even lasting a year (due to being applied under less than ideal weather conditions if I remember correctly). There was a company here whose warranty was about twice that, but since they no longer exist the warranty is useless anyway. I checked one company's website and their warranty reads "the coloured sealant will retain its colour to at least 90% over the 7-year period". I wonder how that compares with the fading of the original tile finish? I can't get into Monier's site at the moment to see what they say but with such a dark colour I would be checking into it. Also would resurfacing Monier's tiles void Monier's own warranty? I just wouldn't want those sorts of questions and worries with a brand new house. If you are building a brand new house you should have new tiles, with some spare new tiles in the same colour to store away for those times in the future when you may need to do repairs or alterations. You should not have what is in effect a restored roof which will have future maintenance requirements over its entire surface. Re: Wrong rooftiles? 7May 26, 2009 7:57 am I think that the roof looks fine in the pic, in fact, looks great! You have to decide how much it is going to irritate you. Will you always look at it, and feel a niggle of dissatisfaction? If so .. then you need to work out how much you need to moan and argue to the builders, and follow the whole thing through, no matter how hard, because starting the fight and not finishing will just make it worse. If you feel very strongly about it, then stick to your guns and demand a new roof. If you think that you can live with it and like it, then you need to make that decision, and never think about it again, or feel any irrits. Sounds good on paper, but a bit more harder in practice. But that is my philosophy in life ... you have to make your decision and then try to move on!! Built the Driftwood with C*ollier Homes Moved in 8 November 2009 Slowly getting organised ..... Re: Wrong rooftiles? 8May 26, 2009 7:50 pm I really like it and wouldn't change it! However we are also getting Barramundi and were tossing up between that and the sambucca.. after reading through your post i was starting to worry what they'd look like.. but when I saw your house I really liked it altogther and I'm glad we have chosen Barramundi! Re: Wrong roof tiles? 9May 26, 2009 8:03 pm I built a house with a black tiled roof (well very dark grey) & to be honest when the total house is done you don't notice the specifics of the 'shade' of black/grey as it's just so striking regardless. Mine had a variation to the sample, but it still gave the look I was chasing. I think it looks fantastic as is, definitely makes a statement. That said, if it's not what you want I'm sure you have grounds to protest. http://aqua-blog-building.blogspot.com/ ... mostly done, hand over to come...Nov 9th!!!! Re: Wrong rooftiles? 10May 26, 2009 8:59 pm As the previous posters, the tile colour difference is quite profound in the photo depicting the different coloured tiles. The photo of the entire house though is phenomenal. It looks really really nice. No green tinge whatsover (perhaps its the lighting but its really come out well). However, if you're not happy with it, let them spray paint it. I do agree that you should get what you ordered. But honestly, the finished product looks awesome Re: Wrong rooftiles? 11May 26, 2009 9:53 pm And whilst I'm sticky beaking at your home, what bricks are they? http://aqua-blog-building.blogspot.com/ ... mostly done, hand over to come...Nov 9th!!!!
