Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 23, 2009 1:12 pm Here's something different I'd like some feedback on. The house we're building is like this: House - Elevation - Front Only - Gable Highlight.jpg There are two gables on the bedroom (right hand side with the long windows). Normally the house & gables get rendered, but we're doing brick only, and I was thinking it might look a bit one dimensional with brick all around in the same color...which are likely to be Austral's Canterbury: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And to which the gables would be Austral's Buff (single color): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is a rough idea of what I'm talking about (thanks Burbank for your House Visualiser !): House Impression - 2 Tone Bricks.jpg Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Face bricks and some feature bricks 2May 23, 2009 2:24 pm Do you want a really honest opinion? Personally I don't like mixed brick. It can look a bit tacky almost. I'm sorry. Plus, I think the Austral Canterbury are such a stunningly textured and rich brick that they are capable of carrying off the facade on their own. I also have a facade with some sticky out brick bits and I would have gone all brick... I'm only having render because my builder gave it to me for free. You could add interest with some stunning landscaping and pots if you are concerned about it being plain. But I don't think it will be because the brick is so beautiful. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Face bricks and some feature bricks 3May 23, 2009 5:06 pm Nice to hear an opinion !!! Yeah look it's early days Joles, but we'll think about it. I just reckon render can be nice to start, but stains and cracks if it's not done properly. Will wait more feedback Re: Face bricks and some feature bricks 4May 23, 2009 5:45 pm Hi guys! Love the Austral Canterbury but think the buff looks really yellow or is it a more neutral colour in real life? I agree 2 tone bricks can end up looking odd but I really like the look of it in the house visualiser... I'm torn... would a Moroka finish (less maintenance than render) look any better Joles? Ok, so I think if you're going to do the bricks you might need to keep a consistent mortar colour throughout and use a more neutral/beige tone brick. Otherwise a moroka finish may be an option. I don't think I've been much (if any) help at all.... sorry... Cheers! Plus, I think the Austral Canterbury are such a stunningly textured and rich brick that they are capable of carrying off the facade on their own. I agree. Not only tacky but institutional. There was a fashion here for a while to build schools and health facilities and so on out of different coloured bricks. I've seen it done well sometimes but usually I don't like it. Seems to me you'll have enough fun trying to match the walls and trim and tiles and carpet and choosing roof tiles and front door colour . . . without trying to get a combination of bricks on the outside right. I'm worried that the other bricks would detract from the Canterbury bricks. Canterbury wouldn't be MY choice but I can see that they would look great (I hope you understand what I mean). Canterbury with those other bricks (which look yellowy to me too) . . . um, er, no, can't get enthusiastic about the combination. I don't know if something else would work better for me, but I think the Canterbury would look great on its own. hmmm id assume youll get hit with the "natural product therefore variation in colour etc" excuse.
