Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 21May 22, 2009 3:01 pm As Joles said - everything we bought we researched fully prior to buying it. We also took room measurements into account as well - I carry a tape measure and a floorplan in my handbag at all times so I can immediately check to see if something will fit or not. We were lucky enough to design our own home so already had the items in mind prior to sitting down with the designer. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 22May 22, 2009 3:14 pm We have become almost obsessed with shopping since we started building! We carry (like Kyton), a tape measure, and the plans with us everywhere (well in the car anyway!)... furniture shopping has become our new weekend past time We have already ordered our sofas, and the living room furniture will most probably be chosen this weekend I think that have the joy of building is the pre handover furniture shopping. So I say "Go For It!" Just make sure you know your space, measurements, and colours first!!! Building with PD - Regent 23 in Point Cook WE'RE IN!!! Landscaping! Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 23May 23, 2009 8:57 am we've been hanging out for the june /end of financial year sales. Every time I've seen a great sale Dh's says... wait 'til June. arghh we want to buy a new tv and could do with some other minor furniture as well. If we wait until then we'll have our keys which is a bonus and can get things delivered straight to the house. Though not the new tv! Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 24May 23, 2009 9:11 am I have bought all of my cleaning products for the entire house, from kitchen to bathroom to toilets and laundry ... Including toilet paper, extension leads, kitchen stuff like foil, cling wrap etc.. We get these great sized boxes from work which means I can't over fill them and then not carry them. Have also bought via layby all towels and heaps of bed linen including a new doona etc... Now that the house is well under way, friends and family are buying me things for the house for my birthday pressies which is great. I have fridge etc.. in storage, dread emptying that storage space I know what furniture I would like and will probably buy it once the house has almost finished and store it at mum and dad's, their garage has turned into a storage facility with me building and my brother renovating I too, keep a copy of plans and a tape measure in the car Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 25May 23, 2009 11:22 am Tillie I too, keep a copy of plans and a tape measure in the car Me too, and a note book with all those things that I need to do for the house. I haven't bought anything for the new house (except for the RWT which had to go in the backyard before the frames go up) ..... yet. Will soon have to shop around for tiles & carpet, laminate flooring, etc. Chris Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 26May 23, 2009 10:23 pm I've got all new towels and bathmats etc. stored away. They were on sale (at Best & Less of all places) and matched the bathroom colour scheme perfectly. Also went out looking at fridges today. Ours is going to die soon, and we need a bigger one, so I'm doing research right now. If the right one comes along at a great price I'd buy it now. Have also bought all our towel sets, beds (got them cheap from friends), washing machine (got cheap off friend), got dinner sets, glasses - wine, normal, cocktail etc, cutlery set, other kitchen accessories, iron, toaster, kettle, washing baskets and other bits and pieces. All things that we will need and wont be effected by colours or anything.... will start looking at other things like dining tables etc and a couch for the main family room once we are closer to being in and can see colours and size of areas.... 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen! We will need a new house by the time we move in to this build. Weve bought many things from couches to lighting, new glass ware and china, ornaments, vases, lamps, dining setting, coffee table, theatre room gear, dyson, shutters and blinds and for those out there who might be interested in helping themselves to our new things, a very loud alarm system!!! You are so right when you say it is hard not to buy with all the sales around. we are selling and moving to the coast, if you know someone who wishes to buy in Mernda Villages, please visit this link http://www.realestate.com.au/property-h ... -107083288 Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 30May 23, 2009 11:21 pm The biggest buy for us has been four sofas! We were in desperate need for new ones and didn't see the point of buying while renting for the last two years. So we started the search late last year and went to a million shops to work out what we wanted. In the January sales we ordered them all from one shop as it turned out. The two for the lounge were delivered in a few weeks (and we are finally getting the olds ones moved from the garage to the charity truck this week!), and the two big ones for the main living area were ordered for delivery in June as we don't have room now (they are over 3m each). Other than that main thing has been light fittings. Plan to buy stools soon and some new towels to coordinate. And likely more stuff.... but handover is close now. I am waiting to be in before considering coffee tables - which we need. I want to see the spaces with couches first and then hopefully I will know what will work. I too always have a house plan on me. For the sofas, I drew up the rooms in Smartdraw and inserted the sofas and other furniture at the right size so could check the scale was right and everything would fit well. Happy shopping! My husband makes me laugh. We get to the shop we want to look at. We get out of the car. I always say take the plans in, he says no, don't as its a buying signal and we are only here to look. And most times he is the one who has to go out to the car to collect the plans because he decides we cant turn down all the bargains! we are selling and moving to the coast, if you know someone who wishes to buy in Mernda Villages, please visit this link http://www.realestate.com.au/property-h ... -107083288 Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 32May 23, 2009 11:33 pm We've been trying to not buy anything as we are currently renting a small place (a 2 bedroom granny flaat) but today we could not help ourselves - we went to Ikea and had to buy two CD racks as they were originally $100 each and they were reduced to $20 each, so we thought, even if they don't match later it's only $40, we could not let a bargain like that pass! I know when I first moved out, for the few months before I started just buying bits n pieces every time I went to the shops. I currently rent on my own though so have everything I need to survive 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I also haven't lived out of home but have been buying the little stuff for a while now so have that stored away (thank goodness for Boxing Day/Mid Year sales hehe). So far I've got on layby a couch, entertainment unit, washing machine, dryer have have the dining suite and coffee table arriving next week (thanks parents for the storage room hehe). Still have to work out which damn TV to get, but will wait for the mid-year sales now I think. Great idea about the cleaning products etc. I should go get some of that stuff very soon and also the pantry staples like flour, sugar etc I guess. Seems like a trip to Aldi is on the cards My current thought provoker is whether to buy the gorgeous leather, 3 seater HT suite I saw yesterday. It's quite reduced in price but I was holding off buying for the HT because I probably can't afford to set it up for a little while. Also I'd prefer a 4 seater but can always add a couple of separate recliners and beanbags for extra seating I guess Why did I have to sit on the beautiful couch, WHY!!!
