Re: I want a secret passage... 62May 22, 2009 7:15 pm I want one too! It will have to be in the next house I build... which won't be for a long time! Until then I will live vicariously through you! It is such an awesome idea. DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! My tac-home-ter: Been in 8 months! Re: I want a secret passage... 64May 22, 2009 8:14 pm ElephantGuy What you also need is a secret switch to open it. I am yet to choose the title of the book. JB Re: I want a secret passage... 65May 22, 2009 8:24 pm James Bond ElephantGuy What you also need is a secret switch to open it. Would if funny if you had a kid and one day they stumbled across it. "WOW look at what I found" hehe then you somehow lock it so when they go back it's just a wall and their friends think they're mad. hahaha I love it. taunting the kids Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! They used to believe me... now they think I'm an idiot. Two people voted for the "Your weird..." bit - obviously I'm not trying hard enough One of the bonus's about owning a secret passage has got to be the instant coolness factor for all visiting kids... but really loving the idea of then locking it up and pretending it didn't exist in the first place so Helloween - I bow to you Building Upside down house in Wantirna VIC Current Stage: Procrastination... it's just all too hard.... I also use to read Trixie Beldon when I was a young 'un!! I loved all the trouble she used to get into!! You need to have a small statue that you pull down to make the bookcase slide aside and reveal your secret passage! Re: I want a secret passage... 70May 25, 2009 5:12 pm Hmm.....we did something like this in our last house. First we built a room in the loft space. This room was about a metre higher than the adjacent bedroom, so the bedroom became a split level room about twice it's original size. From the loft room, more of the ceiling space could be easily accessed for storage and, as the roof was constructed with rafters rather than trusses, there were no struts in the way. It was easy to reinforce the floor and line another "secret" room. For the "doorway", I just framed an opening and covered it with a very large picture (a mirror or any other large panel would've done as well), which I hinged to the wall along one side. I very much doubt any intruder/burglar would've ever found it and it was a marvelous storage room. A large, multi-split level house is ideal for this sort of thing, but, with a bit of imagination, the principles can be applied anywhere. A lot of great ideas on this thread.....exciting stuff Cheers zeke PS One way to deal with an extremely heavy "door" (eg full bookcase etc) would be to incorporate castors under the opening side.
