Browse Forums Building A New House Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg9-Photos 181Jan 14, 2010 11:06 am Was just checking out your photos, your house looks amazing! Was thinking about your pillars... what if you painted them a colour similar to the colour of the bricks and leave the rest of the portico white? Just a suggestion. I actually really like the white! That's an idea, painting the columns a different colour. It doesn't look that bad in the photo, but from the front on it's when it looks really white.... Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg9-Photos 183Jan 15, 2010 9:53 am It may not appear so white once you have the paving/landscaping done. I think it looks great. I also love the kitchen. That is great all the cupboards and space. It looks like you have the bifold appliance doors. Have you checked which way it opens? If it is the same as ours, it will open out towards the person thereby making access to the cupboard difficult? Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg9-Photos 184Jan 15, 2010 2:35 pm Ours open outwards (you'll find you'll lose shelf space if it opens inwards) but as it's in the corner it opens away from us as we open so it doesn't get in the way. If you rotated the door 180 degrees would it be better? If ours moved in the opposite direction it would definiately get in the way. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg9-Photos 185Jan 15, 2010 10:45 pm Our opens outwards too. What I meant to ask is does your cupboard open away from you (ie towards the window)? From the handle location (and comparing it to ours) I would guess that it opens towards you (away from the window). This would be bad. Just wanted to check. Got another question for you - the bedroom WIR doors, have they installed dummy handles with roller catches or proper passage set handles (turning handle inside and out)? Currently they have installed dummies on ours which I have asked them to change. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg9-Photos 186Jan 16, 2010 11:18 am Although the handle is there, if you pull it the door pops open and away from me. There's a photo Mr Smith took of it 1/2 open for me that I can't find to show you. I don't know why they pop it on that side, but there must be a reason for it when it comes to opening it, maybe it needs less force to open? How is yours done? We haven't got any doors for the WIRs (I prefer the open look), but from most houses I've seen, new and old, they have the roller catches, not real ones. I haven't seen any proper ones in there. I think they are more expensive and it's not usually necessary (depending on how it's used). Mr Smith's Mum's house has them and is about 15 years old and they haven't broken or anything if you're worried about that. The ones that break easily are the catches that are like cupboard door catches, as I think full sized doors put a lot of pressure on them. We got our mirrors and screens in yesterday! They look excellent! We are so happy with the tapwear! It all looks good And I was sooooo surprised. We got sinks with those in-built plugs (something we thought we would add in after handover, didn't expect that to be standard!) and they put the taps in vertically which looks cool! I thought that most places just did horizontal as standard. Anyway here are some photos: Here is our stove! Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-Plumbed 190Jan 20, 2010 11:41 pm I'm in photo heaven Everything looks great! Push plugs ARE exciting! And we have the same toilets heeee ! Your hot water system looks so futuristic, it's like you've got a tiny space shuttle preparing for take off next to your house We have the same issue with the toilet window - I should have looked at my plans closer. I'm a big stickler for symmetry, and the extra blank space is going to chafe at me something chronic. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-Plumbed 191Jan 20, 2010 11:44 pm Wow mrs smith!!! You've got a stove, and push plugs and mirrors and shower thingoes!!! you've gotta be nearly all done!! It all looks fantastic - especially your border tile! Loving the *sun* pattern you've chosen viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-Plumbed 192Jan 21, 2010 10:25 am Awww thank you for all the nice comments!! Thechlochlo - no handover date yet, we've had a setback that I'm about the type out below that might delay it a little Dragon - that might be me doing that I can still spend a few hours with a piece of bubble wrap (does mr smith know what he's getting into marrying me? LOL) Vundaful! - Yay! We are toilet twins!!!! I thought the exact same thing about the hot water system! It looks like it's going to take off!!! And I am the same - I hate not having symmetry! So I'm going to have to do something with that extra space..... Maybe a wall decal or something.... Thanks Jodie I love the tiles too I like that pattern too, reminds me of something African-y. OK. Now for the bad news....... LOOK AT THIS!!!!!!! (And it's worse this morning apparently!) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ That's a bedroom! It shouldn't have water in it.... And neither should the Home Theatre next to it!!!! We think a pipe in the ensuite has been drilled into/cracked..... I've called the builder this morning at the after hours service when mr smith called and said it was worse, and they are looking at it right away. I hope the tiles are ok and aren't lifting or anything.... And I'm sure this means plaster is going to be ripped up..... Ah well, at least they are fixing it ASAP! So to make me feel better, here are more photos - the sparky has been in and has lived up to mr smith's very high standards as he has inspected every piece of work and couldn't find anything to whinge about and say he could have done better So I'd like to introduce you to my oven: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And the tiler has finished except for now probably fixing the tiles they are going to rip up in the ensuite, so here is our splashback (ignore the grout marks still on the tiles ) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'll let you know the next story in the saga of "Rooms that Shouldn't have Water in them...." Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-UH OH!!! 193Jan 21, 2010 10:38 am Oooooh already an update! Gee they are quick! Got an email that the plumbers are on their way from our Construction Coordinator and Site Supervisor called up too asking a few questions about where we could see the water and what damage, etc. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-UH OH!!! 194Jan 21, 2010 11:00 am Hi Mrs smith sorry to hear about the leak. Wanted to say I love those splashback tiles in your kitchen. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-UH OH!!! 195Jan 21, 2010 12:27 pm Wow I love it. It all looks fabulous. Shame about that water damage and having to re do that. I have to say I love the white on the outside and would probably just stick with that. We have a red brick house and are going with white wherever we can so I tend to love that kind of look. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-UH OH!!! 196Jan 21, 2010 1:05 pm Hi Mrs Smith, Have just come across your thread and I love your colour choices! Hope the leaks get fixed quickly for you, but I must say everthing is looking fantastic! Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-UH OH!!! 197Jan 21, 2010 1:17 pm Love that kitchen splashback Mrs Smith!!! Fingers crossed that they get that water leak sorted ASAP!! Its great to hear that they're already onto it too viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-UH OH!!! 198Jan 21, 2010 3:29 pm Thanks everyone, the leak should be fixed eventually, the plumbers haven been there most of the day. They should be able to fix the leak quickly as it's probably a drilled pipe, but it's getting to it that would be hard! Just means they'll have to get a few people back to fix it all after they get into the wall. I'm happy they were onto it so quickly! Although I'm scared to see how much they had to rip up. I hope they don't have to rip up the tiles in the ensuite because the tiler is so proud of his work. It could take a while too the more trades they have to get in to fix what got wet.... I love the splashback tiles too! I can't wait until they get cleaned off - you'll be able to see the pattern better. They are glass tiles but have 2 layers, a near black layer and a charcoal layer that has a damask pattern on it that only shows on certain angles I fell in love with them as soon as I saw them! (Which was a bad idea considering they are $35 each.) Re: mr smith&mrs_smiths building adventures-update pg10-UH OH!!! 200Jan 23, 2010 4:16 pm Hey Mr&Mrs Smith, Any update on the leak? Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4784 Re my second point – yes exactly. And often it may take additional time if the manufacturer recommends no more than X meters… 3 5652 |
