Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 15, 2009 9:29 pm We are currently in the colour selection process of our home and have gone with an Ivory tile. The builders use standard grout but we thought grey grout with ivory tiles would be very contrasting. We have asked the builder about using coloured grout and they have come back to us with an additional cost of $1600 which does not include sealing. They seemed very reluctant to even consider it. They will cover the tiles with plastic after they have been laid to ensure the grout stays clean. I have a few questions with this..... * would using the grey grout be extremely noticeable? * what additional maintenace would be required for the beige grout ? * does this price seem excessive for a kitchen, dining, living, entrance and hallway areas when they will be using white grout for the bathroom walls without an additional charge? We'd love to hear your comments Re: Should we use coloured grout? 2May 15, 2009 10:35 pm That seems a lot of money for coloured grout You can buy grout sealer which is meant to help prevent staining. The natural grey color wouldn't look too bad as it is a contrast to the ivory. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Should we use coloured grout? 3May 16, 2009 9:30 am I have deliberately selected a floor tile this time that DOESN'T require a light grout. Had it, sealed and all, in my last house and it did my head in with the amount of cleaning. I am building because the house I fell in love with and wanted to buy had ivory grout - I didn't but it because of this!!! I wouldn't be unhappy with the darker grout if I were you. Re: Should we use coloured grout? 5May 16, 2009 11:41 am Joles - I think it must be the builders we are going with. It seems crazy considering the grout in the bathroom, ensuite and laundry up the walls will be white and have never seen anything in the contract about this being an extra expense. Am going to bring it up with them again on Monday. As for the cleaning, I thought it would be worth it but Houseofl you make it sound like a mission!!! As the house is a smaller one, I just thought seeing the grout between the tiles wouldn't really give a 'flowy' look IYKWIM! As the house is a smaller one, I just thought seeing the grout between the tiles wouldn't really give a 'flowy' look IYKWIM! Trust me it was a mission - we had a pretty large tiled area though. I just couldn't stand looking at gorgeous tiles and then marked grout. Too much work for me. Re: Should we use coloured grout? 7May 16, 2009 7:10 pm The charge sounds over the top, I guess it's a builders way of saying they don't like doing it. We were allowed to choose coloured grout at no extra charge, which is good because I chose a dark grout for the charcoal tiles, and cream grout with the creamy tiles etc. But I also wanted a clawfoot bath (retails for approx $900) and the builder was going to charge about $5k, so yeah just a way of saying "we don't want to do that"!! Thanks splashers, that makes sense. The waterproofing guy used this Davco product, I will raise the issue with builder and hopefully get resolved with him - if not… 2 12895 Hi everyone, Have just put a shower in the laundry and after only using it 2-3 times have noticed staining on the grout. The tiles were glued onto a concrete wall after… 0 5453 That sucks! Hope it all works out. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 17888 |
