I'm now 37 and have just built our 2nd Happy at Home Re: How old were you when... 6Mar 06, 2009 9:40 am I was 26 when I purchased my first home. DH bought land when we were 23 and paid it off before he was 25. He then took until he was 30 before he built on it. Now at 38 we have 4 investment properties and are building our new home.
In hindsight I wish we had of started earlier - but we had a wonderful time before we bought homes, then settled down and eventually got married and had children. Some things are worth waiting for. I think the older people you are thinking of are people who have previously owned houses - I remember when my parents bought a house in the 70's and 80's it was so much cheaper and less % of your income in repayments, so I highly doubt there would be anyone in the 50's+ on here buying their first house (Happy to be proven wrong though!) So my hubby and I met late in life and are only building/buying our first home now in our early 30's. Re: How old were you when... 18Mar 06, 2009 11:15 am Yes, my husband and I are totally "If only"
I worked as a checkout chick when I was in high school, for 3 years, I earnt $15,000 in that time. I am so kicking myself now. I was living at home, I spent it all on food and clothes. I wished I had saved it and bought a small unit when I was 21 or so. Because when you are 33 and have 3 kids, suddenly having to save 10% deposit for a 4 bedroom is insane. Re: How old were you when... 19Mar 06, 2009 11:24 am Seriously, the only reason why I saved the money early on was because I had nothing to spend it on. I didnt get much pocket money when I was a child, so when I started full time work, it seemed like payday came by so often, i didnt know what to do with it. So i saved the money. Altho, I do indulge in shopping coz i love clothes, but I'm not one of those pplz who buy very expensive clothes!
So really, its not like i was smart enough back then to think about saving for a house, i just saved money, i didnt even know what i wanted to do with it.
