Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 12, 2009 8:31 pm Hi everyone. We just had our brick clean last week and have noticed a lot of irregularities in our mortar colour. We need to get in touch with the builder but before we do, I was hoping to get some suggestions as to how (if at all), this can be fixed. We asked for off-white mortar and paid a hefty price for it. It was mixed with yellow sand. The mortar looks, well, yellow, not off-white. Not only that, it's very very patchy. Parts of the mortar are an almost orangey-yellow in colour, parts are yellow, parts are dark and grey-ish and then there's parts that actually does look off-white, but there's no unifomity. What a pain. Option 1. It was suggested to me that the exisitng mortar could be dug out by an inch or so and then have some off-white mortar filled in. I imagine this could be a mammoth task but aside from that, even if we insist this gets done, we are concerned that the new layer of mortar might simply crack and fall away. Has anyone had any experience with this kind of patch up work with mortar? Can this be done effectively and built to last? Option 2. As crazy as this sounds, can mortar be painted - in between the brick work? Too tacky? Anyone tried it? Option 3. Render. This is costly and not what we wanted. Option 4. Anyone have a suggestion(s)? Would appreciate any feedback. Thankyou. Cheers Re: Mortar issue 2May 12, 2009 10:12 pm This sound like the similar things that happen to me (if you look at my building thread) First of all, we don't want to render the whole house, so even we consider this option but we didn't ask at last.. As discussed with the builder, we only have 2 options - 1. pull down the bricks and re-patch (this may take another 2 months since 3 sides of my houses have mortar issue) 2. mortar re-colouring (my SS has found a company which do mortar re-colouring and provide 10 years warranty), so we end up choosing this option and the result looks good.. even Kevin give a thumb during the PCI... I am just asking the builder to provide me that warranty certificate in case i need this company back during warranty period Hope this help Blog - http://clageonewhouse.blogspot.com/ Building Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10886&hilit=milan I am in, with my husband and my beautiful bunny Re: Mortar issue 4May 13, 2009 10:41 am Thank you Claego for your post.
