Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 11, 2009 9:05 pm Has anyone had damage done to their house while it was being built? Theres 2 houses up the street from our block of land and they have had graffiti and broken windows. One of the houses had every window and door smashed 3 times in the last month! You would think the builders would hire security guards to watch the area. Building with Homebuyers Centre El Questro! Re: Damage and theft 5May 11, 2009 9:42 pm It's awful when this happens. I really hope it doesn't happen to our house because for some reason I feel like it was an invasion of privacy and like the house has been "soiled" Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. It is a violation when this happens but the homeowner should not be liable for any losses as the building site is the responsibility of the builder until handover. Not much of an upside though as it's still your future home that's being damaged Re: Damage and theft 7May 11, 2009 11:30 pm Hmmm yes very scary. I feel we have made a big mistake in building in Brookdale. We drive past every day just to see whats happening and theres just mess and broken glass etc everywhere Building with Homebuyers Centre El Questro! You have to wonder if some of it is an inside job. Arent the builders meant to lock up? grrrr Building with Homebuyers Centre El Questro! Re: Damage and theft 10May 12, 2009 2:24 am we have the opposite- instead of stuff being stolen, people are leaving their crap. We had an old crappy garage roller door put on our block, which has travelled up & down the street from one block to the next. also someone thought it would be really funny to roll a massive boulder from the empty block next door onto ours. they even went to the trouble of setting up ramps! Re: Damage and theft 11May 12, 2009 5:55 am The owner of my sister-in-laws rental property stole an oven from a work site as the oven that was in the house blew up I was so happy when I heard that he had to take it back 3 nights later because he'd stolen a gas oven when he needed an electric one. We've often joked as we've driven past work sites about grabbing a 'free' this and that (we've never done it though) and now we are building I get so angry when I hear stories like that... I know it's all insured but if it wasn't so rampant our costs wouldn't be as high. We all end up paying for the thefts in some way or the other! Re: Damage and theft 12May 12, 2009 12:00 pm misscrow we have the opposite- instead of stuff being stolen, people are leaving their crap. Yep that is a common problem too and I have to admit that we have been guilty of dumping a few things but in our own skip and only small stuff. At our last house someone dumped a whole couch in the skip and it took up the whole space Are you building yet or have they dumped stuff on your vacant land? I would keep passing the roller door back down the street to the next block but the boulder is a bit harder to get rid of. If it's a decent looking one, advertise it on eBay for buyer to collect, you will be surprised what people will buy Then you will have the last laugh if you make some money on it Our builder won't put the external door on our garage yet (the personal door) as the SS said it would get stolen. They will wait until the roller doors go on. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, and professionals built the Titanic." Re: Damage and theft 13May 12, 2009 12:39 pm I have wondered about this what happens if the bin get full of other peoples crap, does the builder charge extra or do they wear it? We are living next door to our build block and I'm thinking of hooking up a sensor light and attach an audible beeper so I can run out with my baseball bat!! Re: Damage and theft 14May 12, 2009 1:05 pm Oh my goodness, that is awful what some of you have written. I remember when my parents built, way back when in late 90's and the hot water system was stolen twice! The builder had to replace it, but such a hassle. Some people are just awful! House has been complete since Feb 2010 Moved in April 2010 Outside completed August 2010 Currently working on the inside, painting, blinds, furniture http://ourhouseinperth.blogspot.com/ Re: Damage and theft 16May 12, 2009 5:26 pm Nicci lynnebin1968, Fingerscrossed it doesnt happen to your house while getting built. The delays will be awful. Yeah thanks Nicci We live only 5 mins away and will practically be there all the time to catch the buggers heheheh. Building with Homebuyers Centre El Questro! At our last house someone dumped a whole couch in the skip and it took up the whole space yeah see that would be ok except there is no skip!! its just a massive pile of rubbish that has now been moved to the vacant block next door as we have had handover (try selling that block hahaha). the big arse boulder is still in our yard tho. I really hope it doesn't happen to our house because for some reason I feel like it was an invasion of privacy and like the house has been "soiled" kinda know what you mean, we took posession about 2 weeks ago but havent moved in yet (painitng etc) but clearly a finished house; after all the rain today it was pretty easy to see the fresh footprints all around the outside looking through the windows. I know a guy that renovated his house using stuff from the house being constructed down the road from his. Hot water systems, ovens all that crap. this was years ago before they waited till lockup to put that stuff in. Re: Damage and theft 18May 23, 2009 8:02 am Hmmm - we had $20,000 of windows stolen in Mernda. A builder friend says the police aren't interested as they say it's a civil issue (no longer a crime . In any case as I understand it the police don't attend for anything under $5,000 these days. So where is the government on these issues? Theft & damage must add about 5% to every build - and everyone pays. Maybe they call it job creation!!!
