Browse Forums Building A New House Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 21May 24, 2009 9:17 am OMG photogirl how did I not see this thread, please forgive me WOW WOW WOW I absolutely adore your house, everything about it is just beautiful. The kitchen is so lovely with those gorgeous pendent lights, I love your balustrade around the top wall and have just decided to get that too after seeing yours it will help keep the walls clean....your facade is the absolute best and the colours just perfect...your bedroom doors are amazing your laundry is very similar to my own so love that and that front door I just L.O.V.E. I am so so happy for you You have done an amazing job with everything Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 23May 24, 2009 11:57 am Thanks Suh I know what you mean about the balustrade. With two little sets of chunker fingers in our house I need something for them to hold rather than their hands all over the walls. For some strange reason it also feels a bit safer having something to hold on to than just a wall. I love my front doors too, it lets in such a nice light, plus one less set of blinds to have to deal with. I have to say I am now looking forward to moving in and start thinking about furnishings. At this stage will be taking all our existing things, even though our couch (which is very muticoloured, what was I thinking 10 years ago) doesn't go with house, and then work on changing them. I went to Jimmy Possum the other day and can see their furniture in my house. I love their 1 1/2 seater chairs, so comfy and look so good. I like chunky things. Just can't work out where the money would come from. I think it will be beanbags in the loungeroom for a little while. :lol Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 25May 26, 2009 9:44 am Thanks Judie, it will be worth it. And it will all be a distant memory. Good news is carpet is going in today and cleaners tomorrow, just not sure when stairs are being done. But at least it should all look shiny after tomorrow so will be able to take some more pics. Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 26May 26, 2009 9:50 am Photogirl, now that I think I've finally stoped ing over your beautiful home I think I can finally ask you a couple of questions: Where did you get your beautiful kitchen pendants from? and front door and sidelights, is the glass frosted? translucent? I love that you got away with the big glass panels on the side, apparently now the Australian Standards have changed (at least in NSW anyway) and you can't get the full glass anymore, it has to have the horizontal timber right in the midle, hence making it into two panels... Hi Jochicho Thankyou for the compliment. The pendants are actually from Beacon Lighting, they're called Corso. I think they still have their sale on when you buy one and get a % off the second one and they were reasonably priced too. They are on their website which has all the pricing as well. The glass on the doors is translucent. I know that it is safety glass but our house permit was issued more than two years ago so maybe the guidelines have changed it that time. If they have I am glad that I was able to have them. They come from a company called Aybeez Joinery which is in Melbourne (West Sunshine) which is probably not much help to you but maybe the images on their website may be of some use to you. Ours have been stained with Sikkens HLS in Walnut because we like the darker colours which I think suits our house better. That was done on site by the builders. Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 28May 26, 2009 11:55 am Hey there Photogirl, you have a lovely home with great exterior colour selection too - worth the heartache (judging from the historical thread) Kudos to your architect. You said it's a custom build? I had no luck in resourcing this out for my silly plot of land. I see that you've gone for hydronic heating instead of ducted heating. Good move! I find it amazing that hydronic heating is so expensive to install or have in a home. We wanted hydronic heating too (that's what we are used to having come over from Europe just under a couple of years ago) but found it to be excessively priced. How much did you pay for yours? We wanted hydronic heating too (that's what we are used to having come over from Europe just under a couple of years ago) but found it to be excessively priced. How much did you pay for yours? Hi TC 2000 It worked out to be about $1100 per panel (if I remember correctly), which includes everything. I have a dust allergy so there was no way I could have ducted heating, so this was the only choice. I guess the demand here is not so high so costs are. Plus I could be wrong but I don't think there are any local manufacturers so all the panels have to come from overseas. We did put panels in the upstairs bedrooms but you could probably reduce costs by just keeping them in the living areas. I haven't lived in a 2 storey house before so I might find out the panels upstairs are not necessary or just summer jammies all year round I think. As unlucky as we were with our builder we were also lucky because they did custom builds even though they were a somewhat volume builder. That's why we decided to go with them. Unfortunately that system didn't work out for them but at least we were left with something good out of it. It was unfortunate about you not being able to have the PD house, but at least they would look in your area, we are probably only a few suburbs away from you and a girlfriend of mine was told by them they wouldn't build in this area. M does so it seems strange. I'm getting the feeling that you are still not 100% happy with your house choice. I could be wrong but just in case, have you had a look at Formula Homes. They have two of the MB Homes (Daintree and Port Douglas), plus I think a couple of others that may have been in the pipeline before insolvency. On their website they are saying that they will quote on custom homes (if you bring your architect drawings) so if they are willing to offer that service it would make me think that they may be more flexible in design or may even come up with something for you, because if they can build custom they must be able to design some too. Now in saying this I am not making a recommendation because I have never built with them and wouldn't (for reasons I have already stated but it's not to do with them as a builder), but if they can do what you want and do it well it may be worth a look. Just research them first. They also seem to have houses for subdivided blocks so maybe something that would fit better on your block. I think M do that as well but don't necessarily have them on their website. Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 30May 26, 2009 10:33 pm photogirl Hi Jochicho Thankyou for the compliment. Thanks for that photogirl, I will check Beacon lighting too. So many choices and I am just so indecisive... You must have gotten those panels approved at the right time as now from what we've been told you have to have the bit of timber running horizontally half way down... oh well, we'll have to live with that. Glad to hear that they are translucent as that's what we'll have and it's nice to see that even though you can't see anything through them they still let light through, that's what we wanted. You must be so proud of your home, it looks fantastic! Building a Wisdom Prosperity 23 - http://erwisdomprosperity.blogspot.com/ Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 31May 27, 2009 8:00 pm Hi Photogirl, Love your home especially the exterior. I am building myself in the Adelaide foot hills. I am curious to know did you use western red cedar for your garage door or a metal with the wooden look? I would love to know your thoughts on the look of the two as i know western red cedar is pricey but i love the look! Cheers Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 32May 27, 2009 10:05 pm Hi Cizza Ours is a timber look, it's a gliderol door. We were originally going to have surfmist (colourbond colour) but I changed my mind when the render went on because I thought it would be too light. The actual timber door was a few thousand so we decided to go with the cedar look. I like the door, I think it looks good and it does work well with the house. I think for us the money was better spent on other things. I just realised that the tape is still on ours which has now been taken off, so I'll take a photo in the next couple of days so you can have a better look. DH says the real thing presents a heavier load for the door mechanism and higher maintenance for the timber finish especially if the door is in the weather or facing the sun. Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 34May 27, 2009 11:28 pm Hi Photogirl, Driveway is fantastic, love the mix, you both chose well. Also love the timber around the balcony, I didn't realise that is what you were having, musn't have seen a photo with that on it. Great finishing touch. Missed the last couple of updates on your thread, busy packing! Have finally done with the last box and are off to bed before I colapse. Have the bottle ready to pop tomorrow. Won't have internet for a while as have had trouble getting phone connected so will be in touch soon and may even start my own thread one of these days, better late than never. Good luck with the move. Finally in our own homes. Yipee!!! Re: We're going home, very very soon (pics) 35May 28, 2009 7:31 am Your house is just gorgeous. I bet you're very happy with the end result despite all the heart ache building. Like others I can't wait to see some more photos.
