It was standard for our builder. Re: Do you regret not getting the higher ceilings say 9 foot ? 13May 10, 2009 5:51 pm Can't vote as we got 3m (10 foot!) I don't regret getting them though "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Currently scaping the land. I don't regret getting them though Wow - that wasn't even an option that was offered for us! Re: Do you regret not getting the higher ceilings say 9 foot ? 15May 10, 2009 6:04 pm Hi all I just got told it will cost me $2800 for 6" more. From 2550 to 2700. Man that’s an expensive 6". Good point made. Stone benches I have, but don’t need. What could I do with the $2800, complete home theatre set up? LCD TV. Put it into the carpets. I just spent $3000 on doors so I guess $2800 is not that much. Don’t you think it adds value to the house? I’m also thinking of the resale value also. Re: Do you regret not getting the higher ceilings say 9 foot ? 16May 10, 2009 6:07 pm There's also the aspect of some things which can be done to a home after the build (e.g. we will not be adding our TV/HT until after we build) while if you want higher ceilings you have to do them at build. Re: Do you regret not getting the higher ceilings say 9 foot ? 17May 10, 2009 6:25 pm We went for putting in things now that we wanted that we couldn't upgrade or change later. We can always put in a glass splashback later but we can't raise the ceiling. So we paid the extra for the 2700 high ceiling. The builder we chose to build with has two display homes side by side, one with 2700 high ceilings and one with 2500 high ones. The difference in how it makes you feel is quite palpable. You walk into the display home with 2500 ceilings and feel so oppressed and cramped. The 2700 high ceiling house just felt so much more welcoming and light and had a great feeling of space. As long as you have good insulation in the roof and walls, and good window furnishings, I don't think that extra bit of ceiling space will make a huge difference to heating and cooling. Re: Do you regret not getting the higher ceilings say 9 foot ? 18May 10, 2009 6:30 pm Our house is going to be split level, so the ceiling height varies a bit...we are also having raked ceilings through the main living, kitchen area and a separately raked ceiling over the dining. Both these start at 2700mm at their low side and peak arond 4300mm or so. The master bedroom is also raked. Where there are flat ceilings (in about a third of the house - other bedrooms, theatre, study, formal lounge) the lowest ceilings will be 2550mm and higher ceiling about 3050mm. We love the high ceilings and 'openness' of the house, so hopefully turns out ok! Re: Do you regret not getting the higher ceilings say 9 foot ? 19May 10, 2009 7:21 pm We've gone for 2.4m throughout. A lot of that was due to cost. We have chosen very expensive windows and it would have added a lot of money to make them bigger. Our entrance hall and stairway however is 5.1 metres high, so you do get the feeling of space immediately you enter! JB Re: Do you regret not getting the higher ceilings say 9 foot ? 20May 10, 2009 7:23 pm Wow, 5.1m - now that is high!!!! Re windows, you do not have to have higher windows with higher ceilings - I know some people do but many, including myself, do not - just have more wall above the window, looks fine to me Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive).
