Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 08, 2009 3:37 pm Yes we were visiting our house a couple of weeks ago (before lock up) and as we were dreaming about which furniture would go where - this young 6 year old came bolting in with no shoes and suddenly stopped when he saw us! It scared the hell out of me! I asked him what he was doing here and he wouldn't reply, he just stood there staring at me. After I said that he can get into a lot of trouble being in here, he finally left. I watched him and he lives next door! I knocked on the door to say that her son was running around with no shoes on a construction site which is so dangerous (there was so many nails around) and she just said "naughty boy" and closed the door....hhmmm... Lucky they are only rentors while they they are looking to build / buy elsewhere otherwise we haven't exactly started out as great neighbours. Our SS also said that a couple of houses have had young kids start fires (espeically in areas that are new developments). I guess you can't really stop it. I'd be scared that they would damage the camera's or steal them! Yesterday they visited the site to find two young lads on the property. They ran off. Damage seemed to be a short wall being kicked so the wall was all over the place and evidence of urination. I know when my house starts being built if i find anyone on my property it will be serious hammer time ! anyone else have problems with people messing with your house during construction ? Is it worth installing security cameras during the latter stages ? Is say its worth hiring temporary lockable fencing!! thats AWFUl the little buggers. A house is being built down the road from us had this too and we caught the little buggers stealing bricks and making a piling them up in the middle of the road so cars cant drive down. throwing the sand for the mortar around and rifing bikes through the house. We have temporary fencing and Im so glad we do. I recommend getting that Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! We have neighbours on one side of us who will be living in their house by the time our slab is poured, so our plan is to be quite chummy with them so they'll keep an eye out for us. We're right on the border of our estate wich is lucky, because at least we have one side that is established, and that may deter trespassers etc. I fear that security cameras will be vandalised also, so I'm not sure that would work. I'd love to hear what other people have done, or plan to do while building? Without being there all the time, there isnt really a way to deter them is there. I would woory about putting cameras up. If they come in just to destroy plaster and bricks. they would definately damage cameras! maybe just a sign saying its under surveillance?? I mentioned it to the SS who believes it happened when they took down the scaffolding after doing the roof. I'm pretty lucky that I am building in an established area with neighbours all around me. They keep an eye out for me and there have been no problems. There are kids in the street, but I have let them know it's a dangerous place and they shouldn't be wandering around it. They used to ride their bikes on it after the original house came down, but certainly not anymore. I'm sure they would be scared of getting caught as we drop in several times a day! We do have a temp fence, which is held together by wire over our heads, so difficult for kids to open it, although if they really wanted to get in, they would! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I'm not being flippant but unless it's an OB job it is simply not the owner's problem. It's the builder's problem. There is nothing that can be done about it, if someone wants to get in and vandalise and destroy, they will. No amount of deterrents will stop them. I just figure that there will be so many things during the process that I will have a degree of control over, I'm not going to do my head in over stuff that I have no control over. This is one of the reasons we're employing builders to build our homes for us... so this stuff is their problem. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I can't see the problem - that's why the builder has insurance. As for neighbours (or their kids) checking out our house - that never worried me. I was busy checking out theirs anyway. Re: Kids, Vagrants etc Messing with House during Construction 9May 08, 2009 6:48 pm Don't tell me you've never looked through a house under construction? Even as a kid? We used to climb up into roof spaces, play hide and seek in cupboards, all sorts of harmless stuff, when houses were being built around us when I was a young 'un. Vandalism is another thing, and it's annoying, but at the end of the day, the builder has to deal with it. There are no major dramas around my neighbourhood - the odd broken window, and I suspect careless tradies are responsible for most of those. Re: Kids, Vagrants etc Messing with House during Construction 10May 08, 2009 6:58 pm The harmless stuff doesn't bother me, it the vandals that do. My hubby works on job sites, and things get damaged and stolen. That stuff makes me furious! Makes me want to hunt down the theives and steal all their stuff! Grrrrr Re: Kids, Vagrants etc Messing with House during Construction 11May 09, 2009 9:35 pm What do you mean by vagabonds - I have visions of homeless people sleeping in your half built house I confess I often go thru houses at frame stage, just sticky beaking, checking out the floor plan etc - or even going around the back and looking thru the windows after lockup, checking the kitchen or such. Does this really matter?? I wouldn't mind anyone else doing this when my house was being built Re: Kids, Vagrants etc Messing with House during Construction 12May 09, 2009 9:40 pm Desmondp I know it is the builder's problem but cmon it is your house True - but if you do escalate the situation it could end up as something which ends up coming back to bite you when you move into the home and the people are still living nearby. The builders should be experienced at dealing with this sort of thing - well considerably more experienced than us. Best to leave it to them. Re: Kids, Vagrants etc Messing with House during Construction 13May 09, 2009 9:53 pm You can actually buy dummy surveillance cameras from bunnings they look real to me and cost about $30. They'd have to walk a fair way to vandalise our place. Re: Kids, Vagrants etc Messing with House during Construction 16May 10, 2009 7:44 pm I was having a Mother's Day lunch at a local waterside restaurant today when my new neighbours came up and spoke to me. Their young son is really pleased that my drive has not yet had the crossover done as my drive and the sand make a wonderful bike ramp! I guess as long as he does not harm himself or my drive what the heck. I just wish I was younger and could have a go myself. I remember as a youngster playing on the bomb site next door to where we lived and it was against my mother's strict instructions not to, yes I really am that ancient and I got a 3 inch rusty nail in my foot ending in hospital visits. I really got in heaps of trouble from Mum. (A widow). Can you give advice on how to get missing certificates needed for a form 21?
