Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 16, 2007 10:13 pm Hi, just another silly question but what does 'pre-wire' actually mean? [sneakersss] Re: What is pre-wire? 2Apr 17, 2007 12:30 pm I'm sure there's a proper definition, however my intrerpretation is that pre-wire is the process of wiring a house for "extras" during the build stage.
Pre-wiring can include home theatre, stereo, alarm, data cables, telephone lines, etc. Pre-wire can also include some home automation. The idea is that the wires are put in before the interior fit out (usually the plaster), and are present so that the installation can be completed at a later date. There are various products around - I created a thread a little while back to discuss it. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=1635 Amber did some pre-wire in her place. Cheers Perry PS: No such thing as a silly question! Re: What is pre-wire? 3Apr 17, 2007 12:47 pm I figured it had to do with some kind of wiring relating to 'other' stuff and not your telephone and tv sockets. I mean, what was the point of the electrical appointment if I have to organise someone to put in the wires for the telephone and tv?
And this is the first I've heard of it. None one in the building company told us about this (or maybe I forgot). I suppose I should get on top of it right now considering frame stage is complete! Thanks for the replies, guys. [sneakersss] Re: What is pre-wire? 4Apr 17, 2007 2:07 pm Missy - PD probably won't say anything about it, because it's something you organise and do youself, with the permission of your site manager.
We've not had our electrical appointment yet, but I think they might have tried to sell you the Clipsal Star Serve system? If you take it up through them, then PD will organise the pre-wire for the components included in the Star Serve. Naturally, you'd pay handsomely for it. Send a PM to Amber and asker her what they did - I think John may have done the work himself. Cheers Perry Re: What is pre-wire? 5Apr 17, 2007 2:13 pm Simple definition of pre-wire:
SAVE$$$$ Pre-wiring is putting in any wires for any application prior to the plaster being installed. If you plan on having a 2 story house and the top level is the same footprint as the bottom level and the theatre is on the bottom level, unless you pre-wire the theatre room, you most likely won't be able to do it once the plaster is up. Pre-wiring in a single story house is usually not required as they have drill bits that are 3 meters long now. However it is cheaper to run cables before plaster as the work is quicker (no crawling around in the roof) and cable runs are usually more direct (less cable used). Matt Re: What is pre-wire? 6Apr 17, 2007 2:58 pm perryr Missy - PD probably won't say anything about it, because it's something you organise and do youself, with the permission of your site manager. When you go to your elecrical plan meeting, ask the person to send you the number of the electrician (or get them to contact you). You then have a separate appointment with them to arrange anything you'd like them to do outside of your normal electrical plan. If you're wanting anything other than basic data cabelling, then it might be easier for them to do it rather than you do it yourself...but you will save a lot of money if you can do it yourself. Hubby did our previous huse but we got them to do the alarm, etc, as well, & integrate everything together. Not the cheapest but hubby couldn't be bothered doing it again. Re: What is pre-wire? 7Apr 17, 2007 3:08 pm epiphany is spot on.
PD are extremely strict on not allowing anybody on site who is not one of "their" people. The best you could hope for is them to allow you to run conduits to run cables later. Matt[/u] Re: What is pre-wire? 8Apr 17, 2007 3:40 pm All good guys. Thanks for your responses.
I was freaking out thinking that we had an electrical appointment only to get the socket and not the actual cables. ie. telephone and tv outlets only with no cabling/wiring attached. We spoke to our Site Supervisor and he told us that we will be having our telephone and tv outlets connected as it was something we asked for in our electrical appointment. We didn't want anything other than that so there's no need to get anyone to do any pre-wiring. I was freaking out for no reason at all. Damn those standard generic emails! [sneakersss] Re: What is pre-wire? 9Apr 18, 2007 7:50 am From my experience, the TV points were cabled, but left dangling as we did not ask for an aerial.
Here is a tip for all though. Ask your supervisor for a site visit post wiring but pre palster, and take a camera with you. I have used my photos so many times, it is not funny. Take a house plan, and note what shot is what wall. Adrian B Re: What is pre-wire? 10Apr 18, 2007 9:52 am Thats a great tip.
Photos of cabling are invaluable. We should have a sticky dedicated to tips like this one.... Matt Re: What is pre-wire? 11Apr 18, 2007 10:18 am Even photos of the frame. I had to install some Jensen flush speakers, and knew that I had to come out from the wall due to roofing trusses.
Saved lots of holes in the roof, swearing, and an angry wife! Adrian Re: What is pre-wire? 12Apr 24, 2007 4:38 pm Yeah photos is a good idea. I went around our place last Sun and took photos of our wiring as the gyprockers were due the next day. Funnily enough, that night vandals/thieves came and stole $3k worth of wiring. Re: What is pre-wire? 13Apr 04, 2008 10:30 pm Hi, I went and videotape the plumbing/pipe, electrica/pp and wires, gas pipe, ducted vacuum.
i still need to go back and take more video as i was not given enough time by my builder who was in hurry to go back home... Re: What is pre-wire? 14Apr 05, 2008 8:51 am Pre-Wire or better known as Rough In.
Its what the electricians do generally after the frames/trusses/brickwork and roof has been done. The y wire the whole house ready for the gyprock to go on. Then once the wall/ceiling lining has been done they come back and terminate all the points/light fittings/swtiches. Re: What is pre-wire? 15Apr 05, 2008 12:05 pm mattwalker Thats a great tip. Photos of cabling are invaluable. Matt Couldn't agree more 7 years on and I still pull the photos out occasionally.
