Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 01, 2009 4:49 pm Hi All My Fiance and I are trying to pick our colours at the moment for the outside of our house. There are 2 things that we know for certain... We want a Dark brick and a light roof. These are the bricks that we have chosen http://www.pghbricks.com.au/Bricks/Defa ... ItemId=150 http://www.pghbricks.com.au/Uploads/Dow ... ighres.jpg We can't decide on the roof as we know that they will look different once they are actually on the roof... but we like these ones... (ignore the house, just look at the roof) http://www.colorbondcolours.com/go/bsl- ... ening-haze http://www.colorbondcolours.com/go/bsl- ... shale-grey http://www.colorbondcolours.com/go/bsl- ... watch/dune We have a rendered portico and under the portico is rendered too so we were thinking of having contrasting render... (Woodland Grey for Portico and Paper Bark for the part under the portico) http://www.dulux.com.au/html/inspiratio ... hield.aspx We are thining of having silver aluminium windows but no pics of this yet. Garage door would be same as roof but not sure what to do about fascias and gutters. Also, front door... our builder says that we can't paint it a dark colour so we were thinking of doing it after hand over. We were thinking one of those metallic paints in a gunmetal grey and a high gloss finish for something different. I think a timber door would look out of place with the other colours we have chosen. The door we like is... http://www.corinthian.com.au/popups/pro ... od=PSLM204 Hmmm... I think that is about all I can think of at the moment. Any suggestions would be appreciated Cheers Jon Jon Builing our First Home in Ridgehaven SA https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=23429&p=316543#p316543 Re: Exterior Colour Choices... I think I need help... 2May 01, 2009 5:11 pm Hi Jon, Most of the builders will let you do a dark colour for the door, but in doing so you will void your warranty on the door as far as warping goes. Tell them you are willing to do this and they'll most likely do the dark colour for you. Your colours look ok to me, I'm a big fan of Evening Haze (I'm using it) but I'd probably go with a Dune roof with your brick. But the Evening Haze is beautiful, it has a slight hint of green to it. One little suggestion on the render.... many people tend to use colorbond colours for their render, if you want a bit more individuality I'd use a different colour apart from a colorbond colour. Hope this helps. Jo Edit: there's pics of an Evening Haze roof in this thread... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11623&hilit=evening+haze I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I was thinking the Evening Haze myself but having not seen it in person I didn't realise that there was a touch of green in it, perhaps Dune would be better with our bricks! It looks great in the pics on that link you sent. The weird thing is that I think Dune looks like a really pale brown on colour charts, but it is apparently a soft grey (which is what I want)... I really think I need to see it in person I think I will make some more enquiries about the front door. Does anyone know if you can have that metallic paint on external doors? I haven't seen it anywhere but I think it would look great! Great idea about the render colour, I will keep looking. We do want our house to stand out a little... Is it just me or does Dune have a hint of brown in it? Do I need to get my eyes tested? I think I need help... 6May 01, 2009 5:28 pm Dune is sort of a grey/brown.... that's what makes it so great. It goes with everything. Check Haywgl's building thread. She has a Dune Roof. Oh actually, check DeeElle's thread.... she has a Dune roof and render and other feature render and silver windows! I'll find the links... Haywgl's..... viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10857&hilit=cremorne DeeElle's.... go to page 20 and scroll down to near the bottom.... viewtopic.php?f=31&t=4480&start=380 I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Exterior Colour Choices... I think I need help... 7May 03, 2009 11:21 pm Hey Jo, Thanks for those links, they look fantastic! Dune really is a great colour, I found a way of finding display homes that have been built using colourbond roof colours so I might just have to take a drive and check it out in person. Would be great to get some more imput on our colours. Even better to get some suggestions on render colours or a feature render colour that would go with the bricks and the roof. As far as I know we can have any colour that we like too I am just not sure what colours are going to go with those bricks, We would like our house to stand out a little, but not because it looks silly! In WA you seem to be able to choose whatever paint colour you like... No it's not a requirement. But everyone seems to do it. I specifically chose a render colour that is not a colorbond colour. My entire street has Paperbark feature render.... I mean literally every house that has been built so far. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I guess one good thing about where we are building is that it is an established area, most of the houses were built in the 60s. Definitely going to go with a colour other than a colourbond colour for our render I reckon... I think I need help... 12May 04, 2009 2:51 pm Thanks for clarifying Joles!! Back on the question, a gunmetal gray in high gloss would look sensational in the colours you have chosen. Or you could go for a more commercial looking pale grey framed door (matching windows) with transluscent glass... Re: Exterior Colour Choices... I think I need help... 13May 04, 2009 3:18 pm Thanks Becster, We thought that the metallic look on the door would be quite striking with the colours so far and wouldn't be something that you would come accross all the time (fingers crossed). One thing that I am concerned with is if we were to have Dune on the roof (which looks fantastic on everyone's pics) would it have a little too much brown in it for the roller door to our garage?? Considering that we would be having silver windows and perhaps the metallic grey/light grey front door. Any thoughts?? I think I need help... 14May 05, 2009 12:18 am Love the bricks! We were tempted to use them too but ended up choosing the PGH Oyster. I agree with your last comments about the Dune, I think it might be too brown, the Evening Haze would probably work well. We are going with Surfmist for our roof. We are having 1/2 render and 1/2 exposed brick at the front with 2 render colours being Volcanic ash & Beaver (solver colours). We found that driving around looking at new houses a good way to see what works & what doesn't. The Promenade Estate at Underdale (old UniSA site) was quite good for that. Our custom build with Rossdale http://hazehome.blogspot.com/ https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=17630 Re: Exterior Colour Choices... I think I need help... 15May 05, 2009 10:35 am Hi Woodvillesouth, Thanks for that! I think you are right about Dune. Apparently Evening Haze has a touch of Green to it tho?? Is Surfmist white? It is so hard to tell on the computer and colour charts. I think I will have to take a drive around new areas to get an idea of what does and doesn't work. We are also having exposed brick at the front of our house with 2 render colours too. I think it will look fantastic if we pick our colours right. Does anyone know if Shale Grey (colorbond) has a silverish look to it when it is on the roof and has anyone ever used it for a rollerdoor? Cheers - Jon Jon Builing our First Home in Ridgehaven SA https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=23429&p=316543#p316543 Re: Exterior Colour Choices... I think I need help... 16May 05, 2009 11:51 pm Surfmist is a very light off-white. Looks different under different light. We are really conscious of energy efficiency so we chose the lightest roof we could. We also wanted something abit different to every other house being built at the moment. Everyone seems to be doing either Shale Grey or Dune. Fingers crossed our roof should go on in the next week or so. I will let you know when it does and can give you the address and you can always do a drive by and have a look if you are over that way. To pick the colours you can get samples of the actual steel which can look quite different to the samples in the brochures and then it is best to look at them outside under daylight. We actually picked up some samples from our garage door company (B&D) because they do all the colourbond colours they have little swatches you can take home. We also were able to pick up bigger samples from Stratco when we looking at fence colours. Seeing the big sample changed our mind on the roller door from Ironstone to Monument because Ironstone was too blue. I think I need help... 17May 06, 2009 11:08 am Hi Woodvillesouth, Thanks for that, very helpful! I think I might see if I can get my hands on some swatches and take them to the brick company to see which look best with "Aubergine". That would be great if you could, I work on South Road (Mile End) so not too far away from Woodville South. Thanks again for your help. The address is 5 Haynes Crescent. Our custom build with Rossdale http://hazehome.blogspot.com/ https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=17630 Re: Exterior Colour Choices... I think I need help... 19May 06, 2009 11:25 pm Aubergine is a stunning brick.........I loved it. What sort of colour theme are you going for?.... sounds quite modern. If so look at shale grey for roof would look great with that brick and silver windows, door. Think as a garage door would just be way too bright and stand out. Colorbond Loft would be a really nice garage door colour with aubergine, then you can let your render stand out more. Go down to your local stratco they have 10x10 colorbond samples, the b and d ones are much smaller. If you can post up some mock ups so we can all see......................we are all very interested .... read nosy Re: Exterior Colour Choices... I think I need help... 20May 06, 2009 11:36 pm Just thought this might help since aubergine is very similar to Loft - this scheme is beautiful exchange the white windows etc for your silver and these two colours would be lovely render colors ie dulux crust and dulux dreyfus as render, loft as garage, silver/grey front door, shale grey roof, silver windows aubergine brick STUNNING.................i am bored so thought i would try and help Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thank you @. We are are going to paint the roof a terracotta orange colour. After some… 0 4500 No. It's not original. Circa early to mid 90s would be my guess and maybe even as late as early 2000s 1 6631 |
