Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 27, 2009 3:48 pm In my contract, the ceiling height is 2.44m (8 ft), I don't know whether is too low or not. I heard a lot of person upgrade to 2.59 or 2.74m. But it will cost me more money, and the building permit need to re-submit. Just want to know is there anybody has 2.44m ceiling, and how is the feeling? Thanks a lot Re: ceiling height 2Apr 27, 2009 3:54 pm We have 8ft ceilings in our new home being constructed. We are also renting a newly built home with them; we also built 8yrs ago with the same. To me it doesn't feel any different - the only difference is in our investment property we have 12ft ceilings - what a pain. Can't change the lightbulbs and costs a fortune to run the air conditioner. Our quote for 9ft ceilings was an extra $8k so we went with the standard. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: ceiling height 3Apr 27, 2009 3:56 pm I like higher ceilings, ours are 2.7 m, the old 9 ft, but many houses are the standard 2.4 m or 8 ft. Certainly will be a significant cost to upgrade to higher ceilings, worth it IMO, but many people are happy with 2.4m, wont be too low, will be perfectly normal. Re: ceiling height 4Apr 27, 2009 3:58 pm We are building with 2750 upstairs and downstairs. There is no doubt in my mind that the higher ceilings provide for a grander house. Door heights entrance and throughout can go to 2340x820. Once you have been there you would never go back to a 2400 height ceiling. That said there is a cost to go there. but it shouldn't be much, depending on the floor area, assuming brick veneer, i would guess between 4-7 thousand. And you are correct if your DA is complete, probably a lot of trouble and delay. there is no simple answer. Dan C Re: ceiling height 6Apr 27, 2009 5:02 pm Have grown up and live with 8 foot ceilings (2.4) looking around right now looks fine. Higher ceilings do look nice and make house feel bigger but it would be a pain to resubmit to council let alone costs to redraw, change windows etc. Unless you are really keen for 9 foot and can put up with the pain of changing, stick with 8, you will be happy. Best of luck with new build. Re: ceiling height 7Apr 27, 2009 5:14 pm thanks everybody, I won't change the plan as the builder told me they will start to build my house this week, otherwise everything will be delay. Maybe next time, I have enough money and time, I will consider the higher one. Re: ceiling height 9Apr 27, 2009 7:19 pm at the moment in our townhouse we have 2560 (8ft 6") in the living areas and main bedroom and the 2 minor bedrooms and bathroom are up a step so are 8ft ceilings... 8ft is certainly ok, but in our new house we will go 2560 (8ft 6") throughout. I think it is the perfect height and not too expensive to run heating and cooling... Re: ceiling height 11Apr 27, 2009 8:28 pm hey there, we went higher, but that is standard with our builder. I don't think you should worry about not getting higher ceilings. I think higher ceilings are about giving the illusion of a "larger" more spacious room. So think about other ways you can do it (eg. light colours, smaller furniture, nice simple window furnishings) and spend your extra $$$ on those things to give the same illusion has higher ceilings. It's all about perception! Annie A thankful person is a happy person. If you stay with 8 ft ceilings you are not necessarily doing something bad. Our old house had 8 ft ceilings and didn't feel claustrophobic, but it probably would if we went back there now. We have 8 1/2 ft ceilings now due to the upgrade package at the time, not sure if we would have paid to get them otherwise, but admittedly they are a good thing and give the impression of a more spacious house. Re: ceiling height 14Apr 28, 2009 10:33 am I think I've said this in another thread on the same subject...so stop me if you've heard it all before We had to go to 2700 due to covenant. Would we have upgraded if we didn't have to.....probably, but I think I would have only gone to 2550. We had 8ft back at our old house and the place did look small.........mainly due to the fact that the house was small.......no amount of cieling height could have fixed that Re: ceiling height 15Apr 28, 2009 10:46 am I think the cost for us was around 4k for 8.6' ceilings throughout the house, and the cost was $900 for us to raise the entrance way ceiling to 3m's. That said, if I had committed to 8ft ceilings already, and it meant that my house would be delayed if I changed it, I would stick with 8ft. There's nothing wrong with 8ft and as some of the people here have said, it is the norm. Our house thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=18335 Re: ceiling height 16Apr 28, 2009 1:53 pm I think as Lostcause said previously - if your rooms are small then a standard ceiling is not going to make the room feel "bigger". But our new home is almost 50sq - and I can bet your bottom dollar that having 8ft ceilings is not going to make it feel claustrophobic in any way possible Some things are worth waiting for. Re: ceiling height 17Apr 28, 2009 5:41 pm mine are 8 1/2 ft and i think that's about as low as i would feel comfortable with. we did live in a new house with 8ft ceilings in the past and I really hated it, too claustrophobic. Once you start putting things like ceiling fans in they start feeling a bit too low with an 8ft ceiling but if you dont plan on doing things like that then 8ft should be fine. Re: ceiling height 19Apr 28, 2009 8:00 pm We are going for 2.7m. for me, it feels more inviting * Are we there yet ?
