Re: My new house in Madeley (WA) - Brickwork started 24May 08, 2009 12:15 pm Kash Hi there, do you mind me asking which colour bricks you're using? They look like they might be the ones we've chosen and i'm kind of hoping they are since they look so good going up on your place... ... I think they were called Telfer. I will check when I get home and let you know if they are not. When we went to the Home Builders Centre in Subiaco, they gave me two samples and two roof tiles, so I had them at my front door and looked at them every time I went inside, and that helped me make a decision!! Will we swing by tonight to see it? Home Group WA Monte Carlo Timeline on Page 1 Re: My new house in Madeley (WA) - Brickwork finished ! 26May 19, 2009 9:24 pm The brickwork is now finished. Not sure how I feel about it, as it looks so scrappy without the rendering. I also wish that I had noticed a few more things in the plan ... the main bedroom door opens in a strange place ... and I wish that my passage wall was not so long. It would have been nicer about a metre shorter ... in line with my theatre wall. It is irritating, that no matter how much you study your plan, there are things you didn't notice until it is built. I often look at the walls and think they are wrong, and then go back and check the plan, and sure enough .. it is exactly as stated on the plan! I was sure my pantry was bigger! Anyway .. I am sure I will love it all once the plaster is on. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Pantry ! Standing in the entrance hall it you could see so many different walls it looked like a maze. When I came home to check the plan it was longer than the vertical theatre room wall, but in the display home the passage wall was in line with the theatre room wall. We transposed/inverted our plan from the original, but the drafty must have left the wall longer on our plan (must have used the template of the original, and made a few changes). I phoned my CS who said that they never make variations during the build, but when I said that it looked like a drafting problem, and was not aesthetically pleasing to the eye she said she would take it to the managers. I only had a few days to do this, as the roof beams are starting hopefully on Monday (weather permitting). Anyway, to cut a long story short, she phoned and said the 'managers' could see my point of view, so would allow a variation, but the bad news was that it was $650. ($300 for the variation, and $350 for the trady to cut the wall down by +- 70 cms. I felt so strongly about it, and knew that it would always irritate me, that I agreed, but told her I would write a letter stating that it was unfair to ask me to pay the whole amount, and that I wanted to negotiate the price. She said that I had signed agreement for the design all the way along, but I replied that we are such greenhorns as far as building, that we definitely needed a bit of advice and help from them, as they were the professionals. They should have picked up that their drafty inverted the design, but left the theatre wall longer than it should have been. (If you look at my plan at the beginning of this thread you will see the passage wall on the left of the theatre). Anyway, they cut it off today, and it looks a million times better. Opens up the whole front entry, as it was in the display home. Now I just have to write my negotiation letter and hopefully the least they will do is absorb the variation cost, and only charge me the labour charge (even though I think that they should absorb the whole charge!!) Re: My new house in Madeley (WA) - Brickwork finished ! 30May 24, 2009 8:55 am I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Well done for sticking to your guns. I'm betting if it bothered you that much even if they won't come to the party you will always be glad you did it. BUT fingers crossed they might "reduce" the cost at least. ( we managed to do this with a site works issue) Re: My new house in Madeley (WA) - Brickwork finished ! 31May 24, 2009 9:32 am Thanks Kexkez. You are right. I know it would have irritated me every time I looked at it, or bumped into it!! I said to my daughters, that it was worth the $650 not to have to complain about it all the time, but hopefully they will reduce it. If not ... my happiness is worth that!! It's good that you sorted out the wall, at the end of the day when you have moved in the money spent to rectify it will be a distant memory. BTW, I hope you do get your money back, but I think the fact that you signed off on the plans, and it was actually well in to contruction that the error was picked up, I don't fancy your chances. It is clearly shown on the plans where the wall finishes. It would totally be a good will gesture on the behalf of the builer to waive the fees, maybe this is the angle you could take. Good luck. Re: My new house in Madeley (WA) - Trusses going up 36May 26, 2009 8:04 am Thanks Davden. I haven't written my "pleading" letter yet, so will definitely go that direction. I always think that one catches more with honey than vinegar (or whatever that cliche is!!). It has made a huge difference having it cut off, and opens up the hallway area tremendously. I hope that the best outcome would be that they would pay (somehow I think not), and then next best scenario would be that they would absorb the $300 variation fee, and I just pay the $350 labour. Could live with that. Built the Driftwood with C*ollier Homes Moved in 8 November 2009 Slowly getting organised ..... Re: My new house in Madeley (WA) - Trusses going up 37May 26, 2009 9:04 am Your house is looking great. Doesn't having the roof trusses go up make such a difference. You really start to get a sense of the space and feel relieved that it isn't so small after all. good luck with your letter. Re: My new house in Madeley (WA) - Roof tiles on 39Jun 20, 2009 9:43 pm Phew!! It seems as if it has been ages since I have had anything to post. They started with the roof tiles, and broke sooo many (The skip was overflowing), that they ran out. There was a patch of sky, and we anxiously hoped it wouldn't rain, as the bathrooms were getting deeper with water, and that will delay the rendering of the walls. Anyway, happily just after a little rainstorm, when I went on Thursday, they had finished the last little patch, and my house has been snuggly safe from the heavy rain we have had the last couple of days. Not sure if I love the colour of the tile, as when the tile is even a little chipped, the terracotta/pink colour from the bottom of the tile shows through. I also wonder if the baking of the batch was good, as they broke so many tiles, ....I feel it isn't a good sign. Anyway, will have a chat with the site supervisor, as we got a letter from C*ollier, saying that we were far enough along with the building, for us to have a face to face chat with the supervisor at the house, and that he would phone and set it up. The tiles in the full house shots, look dark, but when you see the close up, the tile is a lightish brown. It is called Truffle.
