Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 22, 2009 6:48 pm Does anyone know what a brick piers 230 x 350 is? My daughter is building a house, and was told during their initial meeting that they would have a half wall between the lounge and games room. When we went to have a look at the internal walls being built, the wall has been built (half height as expected) but at the end of the wall is a roof height pillar (in the external facebrick brick). When she queried her builder (not the site supervisor), she was told that on the plan it says brick piers 230 x 350 and as she has signed the plan, she can't change it. She is devastated, as she wanted pure open plan (other than the half wall), but now the brick pillar makes the whole room look smaller. Does a brick piers 230 x 350 mean roof height pillar???? Is there anything she can do. The roof beams are not on yet, so if anything can be done, now is the time. Re: What is a brick piers 230 x 350 ...? 2Apr 22, 2009 7:23 pm I think to label something a pier means that it is below the floor in question. To label it a column would be above the floor in question. Do you have internal elevations for those rooms? Corner block, lake view, custom design Re: What is a brick piers 230 x 350 ...? 10Apr 23, 2009 8:08 am maybe it's a structural thing if there's no frame??? best speak to the Construction Manager to sort out. Re: What is a brick piers 230 x 350 ...? 11Apr 23, 2009 8:17 am I don't think it is structural as with our brick "frames" our houses are stronger!! Don't you remember the story about the three little pigs? Our houses in the West can't be blown down by the wolf because we build in brick?!!! The problem is, the company she is building with, only allows her to speak to the girl in the office, and not anyone else. The girl said "you signed the plan/contract" therefore you can't make any changes. Problem was ... they didn't see/know that the pillars were going to be roof height. Their rep had told them they would be half height, the same as the wall. Therein ****** the problem!! Is it too late to do anything?? Re: What is a brick piers 230 x 350 ...? 12Apr 23, 2009 8:26 am you have to persist and try and talk to the CM or the CSR's supervisor. Re: What is a brick piers 230 x 350 ...? 13Apr 23, 2009 9:26 am they could well be structural if there is a wide ceiling area that is open. They can put in a long steel support beam but if the area is open plan there maybe a need for a pier for support for the beam. We've avoided any piers this time but last time we built we had one pier in our house and a massive length steel beam across the span of the room. My best friend who built a similar design also needed the same. it might be possible to avoid it with additional steel beams in the roof. BUT $$$$ I would guess more. I notice this time we've got the steel beam across our open plan section but the widths across aren't as great as last time. Re: What is a brick piers 230 x 350 ...? 15Apr 23, 2009 12:10 pm I am also building a house, but with a different builder, (obviously diff design though), and my open plan area is much larger than hers with no pillars needed, which is why we just thought they were cosmetic rather than structural. They really do seem to cut off the 'open-ness', so she is disappointed. Built the Driftwood with C*ollier Homes Moved in 8 November 2009 Slowly getting organised .....
