Browse Forums Building A New House Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 21Apr 20, 2009 6:11 pm I think dark colours look good. We have Hawthorn bricks with black guttering and facia and charcoal coloured roof tiles. Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 22Apr 20, 2009 7:39 pm Wow, those are some beautiful houses. I haven't put up a picture as yet so quickly took one at the house tonight. We are also going dark. Night Sky Roof, guttering, down pipes and windows (cedar windows to front and back). Surfmist fascia, Austral La Trobe Bricks. Our cedar doors and windows will be stained so they will also be a bit darker.
Ground floor rendering unfortunately isn't coming up a true colour but it's more chocolate, it's looking a bit grey here. I know how much Jo loves the browns and I don't want her to get upset thinking we may have added greys in here. Just about had to go into the neighbours front yard to take the photos, so sorry but have to include the fence and tree. I think I'm starting to turn or something... I blame SuH and Southies! It's an evil plot to make me like brown.... I'll always be a grey girl... you have a black roof! That's why it works! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 25Apr 20, 2009 8:40 pm I don't want to dissuade you from a dark/dark scheme, but you should consider very good insulation (perhaps in the walls too). As kristofw says, it gets very hot with a dark house. My friends have built using medium red bricks and charcoal roof and they now wished they'd gone lighter, for the roof particularly. The loved how it looks but hate the heat of summer. As they said, they don't care how it looks on the outside now, as they are most often INside it and just wished they'd thought about the solar absorptance issue (and high cooling bills) that they're now dealing with. I love the dark/dark look on many houses, and your houses are lovely, but I am too worried about the heat associated with them and want to try to get away without needing aircon at all. Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 27Apr 20, 2009 8:55 pm Thanks Jo and Southies, I am just very excited to have something that actually looks like a house. And we will be having handover in about 6 weeks so after 2 years it's finally getting there. Annie.s, it is something you have to think about, although it's also something you have to think about a bit more for a 2 storey house because it does get warmer upstairs. Not so great for summer but probably a plus in winter. We have insulation in all internal and external walls and roof and I think that having a slab also helps with keeping the house cooler. Our old house was a single storey cream brick with teracotta tiles, it was a hot box in summer. The tiles also really held the heat and it took days to cool down. I think that insulation does have a big part to play as there wasn't really any in that old house and we really felt it, both in summer and winter. Having a colourbond roof, even though it is dark, is still better for us than the old tiles we had, because colourbond cools down a lot quicker (well from what I've been told). I'll report back next summer. Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 28Apr 20, 2009 9:00 pm photogirl: I'm glad you've thought it all through. I've heard stories from so many people who never considered the heat issue and are now kicking themselves for it. You're rather well insulated! That will help with less expensive cooling bills I'm sure! My tac-home-ter: Been in 8 months! Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 29Apr 20, 2009 9:10 pm donuts gorgeous photogirl! thanks for the pic. Is that a stackstone pillar in front? Or something else? Thankyou. It's a split stone brick so different to stackstone. It's called Split Face Coloured Concrete Masonry from Austral. The colour is Riverstone. It's just the same bricking method as with the house. Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 31Apr 20, 2009 9:50 pm Wow your house looks fabulous photogirl, can I ask who your building with? Our house also has the dark/dark combo, and I think it works well. Sambuca roof tiles, Austral Tan bricks (dark brown) and all surfmist fascias and downpipes and gutters. So go for a bit of contrast, ours also has off white mortar. Built the Atlantique 37 Mk2 with Carlisle Homes - WE'RE IN!! Everyday there seems to be more and more being done. They started the kitchen cabinets today and put all the cabinets in the laundry and bathrooms. It was too dark for photos but I'll go in the next few days to take the internal ones. By then there should be a lot more done, maybe even the painting which will be good. The stairs are in too but they are covered up with cardboard and cloths at the moment so nothing really to photograph. S&P, we were building with Marshall Baker Homes. We have new builders now, they are fantastic. I haven't actually ever spoken to them about advertising their details so might just speak to them first. They do quite a bit of commercial building and they also specialise in insurance work. Our insurance company bought them in. So glad they did, they are doing an amazing job and are really detail oriented. I blame SuH and Southies! It's an evil plot to make me like brown.... I'll always be a grey girl... you have a black roof! That's why it works! I'm actually thinking we must be one of the last to have a black colorbond roof, I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are discontinuing Night Sky. Hope I never have to replace part of the roof or a window. Re: What about dark bricks and a dark roof? anyone done that? 35Apr 21, 2009 2:57 pm wow, so many great photos! Southies, House-to-be, Stormy and Photogirl - your houses all have the same dark bricks and roof with light accents that I'm planning and they look fantastic! phew! Stormy - we're thinking we'll get the full sized bricks, although the small ones are great because they're rare - you know your house will stand out if you have them! what turned me off them was mainly that Henley say they'll only use them for the front of the house and regular size for the rest off the house and I was worried it would look sill because we're on a corner. also.. london blend are already the most expensive bricks we could get and the roman version are more expensive still! - we're going to get the Byron facade. I love the long thin windows. * I should really start a blog or thread so I can put plans and pictures up - I just don't really have much to show or say yet! Annie - a few people have mentioned the heat issue and I think it's a very good one to consider. we live on the top of a four story brick appartment block at the moment and don't have an air conditioning at all. Apart from those 40+ days we don't usually even bother to turn the fan on. We're used to it! In fact - I often find other people's air conditioned house too cold! When we were visiting the display homes in summer I always had to remember to bring a jumper! We are getting evaporative cooling though, so even if it's hot with a little cooling i think we'll be fine. I know we have insulation (everyone has to be 5 star energy rating and that is unachievable without it) but i don't know yet how much or what kind. I guess in winter we'll need less heating, too!
