Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 19, 2009 1:56 pm We are building a new home in Perth and I am so confused when it comes to this new fandangled thing called smart wire!! I have read all the stuff on the net saying that it can turn lights on and off... foxtel and internet networks... security blah blah blah... but i am confused as to should we be looking at getting it smartwired for value to the property as well as functionality. Also is there options with the wiring to upgrade / add on features at a later stage. I know that every house is different so thats why they do quotes..... but does anyone have a ball park figure for a 4x2 295m2 home Thanks Sjay Re: To Smart wire or not to Smart wire 2Apr 19, 2009 4:27 pm I have also been considering it, but the full smart system can be very expensive - $4,000 to $8,000 for the equipment, and a whole lot extra for installation. Keep in mind that there are different levels. One, which many people can find the most useful, is the cheapest. Clipsal calls it StarServe. It is basically the ability to have TV served to various points around the house (including sharing Foxtel), plus having computer network points that can be easily plugged by you to provide either network or telephone. Therefore you can have a network point in each room, then when you want plug the wires so either network or telephone comes through that outlet. Very flexible, very nice. The more expensive systems have the lighting system, but what's the point? It's lots of money. It allows you to turn off all the lights by pressing one button, but the thousands extra it will cost would pay for many years of electricity. When it comes to selling your house you are unlikely to get any extra for the house, so you lose all the money. Re: To Smart wire or not to Smart wire 3Apr 19, 2009 6:05 pm Yes, I remember the Clipsal spiel about all this - how one can have telephone amd TV points in every room, just in case one gets an urgent call when in the bath, or wants to watch TV in the toilet and the garage remote control can turn the lights, music and coffee machine on for you as you enter the house Hmmm, we've been in our house 6 months and managed fine without all this stuff. Re: To Smart wire or not to Smart wire 4Apr 20, 2009 9:47 am I have been using a wireless phone and Wireless laptop for years - and the Playstation is also wireless ?, not really sure other than TV points in other rooms what else you would wire ? I can "kind of" see the value in having your lights connected - not sure how much wouls set you back to do those items.... all in all it still seems a bit gommicky for the money. * Are we there yet ? Re: To Smart wire or not to Smart wire 6Apr 20, 2009 12:07 pm It was a covenant of our estate that we had to get it included.. however i know we will not be using it to it's full advantage.. hell, we probably wont be able to afford internet or phone for the first couple of years. We are paying $2,300 for the smart wiring basic package. (Or should i say the Builder is paying? ) I think you'll find a lot of places will eventually need it in years to come, because they'll slowly fade out the other way.. (bit like digital tv and analog tv) It's MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to install it while your building, then having it done later down the track. But I probably wouldn't have it installed if I had a choice in it and had to pay for it.. Because i know I won't be using it to it's full advantage and wouldn't be prepared for fork out the cost.
