Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 18, 2009 8:00 pm About a month ago me and my bf went to the National Tiles selection place to start getting an idea of the tiles we wanted. We ended up picking all the tiles from the standard range (not our actual selection appointment just getting ready for it) which we were really happy about as the selection wasn't huge! We were already paying almost 6k to have tiles layed in the family, dining and rumpus rooms so it was pretty costly to begin with ($79 sq/m)! We went again today as our appointment is next week and all the tiles we picked are now upgrades We were told it would cost ANOTHER $20 a sqaure metre to have the tiles we originally picked bringing our total tiling cost to almost 10k!! And to get the tiles layed from NT themselves is less than $40 sq/m so they are charging more than double now! It is so annoying that builders can get away with this!! And what made it even worse is that they haven't added any more tiles to there standard range meaning even less of a choice than last time! While we were still in the NT showroom we emailed our CSC to get all tiling (apart from wet areas) taken out of our contract to get them done after handover so we can now pick what we want and get it at a reasonable price!! Just needed a rant and thought I'd give other PD customers the heads up! Re: Annoyed with PD - tiles selection! 2Apr 18, 2009 9:56 pm Georgie we are going to build with Places which is the same company as PD, and we have been thinking about doing the same thing. They have a promotion at the moment where you pay $2K and they tile the kitchen, entry, ensuite, bathroom & laundry & carpet everywhere else. We were advised by our sales consultant to still pay this $2K plus an extra $4K roughly to upgrade to tiles for family & dining instead of carpet. Do you think we could get it cheaper if we sourced it ourselves? Where abouts is this National Tiles place? we have yet to book our colour appts, but sounds like a good idea to get some quotes first. Thanks in advance Cara. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Annoyed with PD - tiles selection! 4Apr 19, 2009 11:11 am Did you pick/choose your preferred tiles before your actually colour selections? Sorry to say but alot of builders do this, they change their ranges from standard to upgrades, and vise versa. I guess you can take comfort in knowing that some builders do this and not just PD. Sorry to hear about your troubles but I think its a great idea to do it after handover. It would end up being heaps cheaper for you anyways. Good luck. Plus builders ranges are not only over priced but not the best quality. Plus builders ranges are not only over priced but not the best quality. It depends. At the moment with the bonus of cheap flooring throughout in the promo, and only paying the upgrade price, it is neck and neck. My tile upgrade price was , but it wasn't going to be that much cheaper to do it ourselves after handover once the promo was taken into account.... and then there is the issue of the wet areas and other areas tile matching up. For some people this doesn't matter... for me it's a biggie. It just works out easier for us to get them to do it. But without the flooring promo, definitely cheaper to get it done after handover. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. We are going to keep the carpets from the promo and will still have PD doing the bathrooms and laundry - it's not too much to upgrade as they are small areas. It was just really annoying that they really don't have much in their standard range now! I'm not that fussy but their choices are pretty average as I'm sure all builders are.
