More info on Epping, Victoria

Hi,
My family and I are moving to Melbourne later this year. We will initially be renting but I am also considering taking the plunge and buying a house and land package.
At the moment, we're thinking of Epping. We haven't spent much time in Melbourne and have not been to this area. Is anyone building in Epping?
What is the area like?

From reading the forum, PD and Simonds are the more reliable builders?

Also considering buying in the east for about $350k range for a 3 bedder.
But problem with that is stamp duty is so high.

We have quite a few friends living in the East. And was also told by a few people that East is a better place to live (no offense to anyone here).
But considering that, East is expensive. So the next option was North.
Epping is only 20kms to the city and has a train line. Nearer to the east and near the airport as well. We like to travel

It's the nearest new development i could find either North or East/South East.

nearest to what?

if you're talking about the CBD it is not the nearest, then again price range changes significantly the further in you go.

Nearest to the CBD which is around the $300k mark for a house and land package.

I have a mate who used to live in Lalor (close to Epping) and from his place to Port Melbourne on a Sunday was terrible in traffic (High Street). I'd hate to see it on a weekday!

He was originally from Sydney, and he compared it to being like Penrith, except to the north.

We were from interstate, and had no Tag on the car, so we couldn't just cruise through. I just followed his instructions, as it was the first time we'd been to Melbourne.

We did actually get a fine in the mail for travelling on one section of tollway out on the west side..... but that's another story!
