Re: Air return vent, What is it? 2Apr 14, 2009 11:23 pm Yes, this will be the air intake for ducted heating/cooling. WIR doesn't seem like much of a place for one. Ours is in the cupboard under the stairs. Maybe there'd be room in a linen cupboard or similar? Re: Air return vent, What is it? 3Apr 14, 2009 11:37 pm it sucks your air in for your heater.. ours is in the corner of the WIR also.. doesn't really take up much room though as that spot would be hard to access your clothes anyway, so really is the best spot.. otherwise it will take up alot of room in another cupboard. If you have slab then it goes all the way to the ceiling... floorboards it isn't so bad as it goes under the floor and therefore takes up less room. Re: Air return vent, What is it? 4Apr 15, 2009 7:56 am Placement depends on the layout of your house. The return air needs to be positioned somewhere where airflow is unobstructed, and preferably fairly central within the house. Poor placement of return air will result in a lot of frustration with your heating/cooling. Yes, it has the silver ducting attached to it, but you don't see that - all you see is a plastic grille that sits more or less flush with the plaster. Often they're in a wardrobe or broom or linen cupboard. However you do it, you lose a little space somewhere. In our old house, the WIR was the ONLY place we could put it, with the grille on the rear wall of the dining area. Not my ideal, but we had no choice.... Have a look at some display homes to see where they've placed it - you might come up with a brilliant idea. Re: Air return vent, What is it? 5Apr 15, 2009 10:42 am Thanks Can the grill be put up high or does it need to be near the floor. Does it need to be in an open area, could I put it in a hall way? If you have a look at my floor plan, ist up for comments, you will see Ive taken out the WIR in bed 3 & 4. Ive replaced them with BIR Ive plenty of space in bed 3s BIR and the grill could face the hall. What do you think would it still work OK. Thanks people you are a great help. Re: Air return vent, What is it? 6Apr 15, 2009 11:18 am By our plans its half way down the hallway to the bedrooms How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5947 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
