Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 12, 2009 2:22 pm Hi all Our home completion date was approx 6 weeks ago and the builder/his subbies have been on site for about 8 days since that time. We understand the builder has approx 20 houses on the go at once and doesn't seem in much of a hurry to complete ours. Our contract specifies $200 damage for every week the completion is late, however, according to the Building Commission, we can actually delete the exact cost to us each week we are not in our home on time. This is approx $370 a week. The interior of the house was painted approx a month ago - three guys painted the entire 35sq home in two days! We were concerned about the finish, so we just had an independent inspection done. Some of problems include: all of the cutting in only has one coat of paint there is several cracks in the paint, around door jams, between wall and ceiling joins etc Can anyone tell me if there is a tolerance for this type of finish - do we have any recourse? The painting is very ordinary in places and very noticeable to the eye, even though it's all white. My other question is - has anyone at this point tried to sever the contract and finish the remainder of the house themselves? cheers Building in remote, regional Vic We have roof, frame, walls, plumbing, electrical....but no bricks! Re: Builder delays and substandard work query 2Apr 12, 2009 5:34 pm a friend of mine just went through a similar fiasco. basically they witheld progress payments...funnily enough the builder very quickly got his rear in to gear and finished the project but they are taking him to the building tribunal because he substituted various materials without their knowledge that could not be removed and fixed without pulling the house down. at best they hope the guy will lose his licence but they do not expect to get any compensation from him.
