In a traditional sized toilet space, you have to wash your hands from the front. For kids and anyone a bit frail, the leaning over could be a problem. If you can come from the side of the toilet they are much better. Does that make sense? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Where would people dry themselves? Either in the shower or in front of the basin. It could work, but do I like to have an area for drying myself. I think the loos with built in handbasins are pretty awkward and are really only for a desperate situation which you clearly aren't in. Re: Seperate Toilet or not 30Apr 12, 2009 8:43 pm cyberman As a cheaper, space-saving and more ecologically-friendly option, why not use one of the Caroma Profile 5 toilets (with inbuilt hand basin)? There is a handbasin in the top of the cistern which automatically drains into the cistern so that water is used for the next flush. My uncle and aunt have one of these at their house and its a great water saving and space saving device (after years of having to use the laundry every time the bathroom was full its great to be able to use the toilet to wash my hands - sounds icky but is really cool). Only thing is that you only get cold water.. but hey.. thats cool. I'd install one myself but we will have recycled water flushing our toilets anyway. -------------------------------------------------------- Building in Highlands Craigieburn Status: Building the Laundryless 25.5: Slab Complete Re: Seperate Toilet or not 31Apr 12, 2009 11:21 pm When my parents built our home, they chose to put in a 3 way bathroom, which ended up being the best thing ever - especially considering my brother and I were coming into our teenage years. Basically you walked into the basin area, which had a lovely big mirror (in case we were both getting ready at the same time). Then the toilet was off that, as was the bathroom. We had a bath as well, but the same design would work here. Mind you, this was when you could still easily put a skylight in the roof and not worry about energy ratings! I dont have a design program to dummy it up, but basically if you pushed the toilet to the back and rotated it 90degrees, behind the basin, and then you still have the shower room off the side. Perhaps you could consider something similiar, if it is an option. Re: Seperate Toilet or not 32Apr 13, 2009 8:58 am Hi everyone. I had to go out yesterday arvo but I was delighted at the response I got to my situation. Thanks for all the imput. Everyone has different tastes and priorities. Here is what I like about the suggestions thrown up. I had originally considered a design like Joles came up with but dismissed it because I thought it might make the bathroom too small. I figured you'd have about 1100mm x 2300mm of open floor space and this might not be enough. I am now seriously considering this. I think I almost need another 400mm in the width of the house but am faced with the question of wether I should add over 1 square to the size of the houseto get the seperate toilet. I don't want to have too small rooms. Carlos, I agree with flipping the shower opening if we go down the Joles route. I also agree that having the glass shower screen will give the illusion of space. Once again I originally didn't want a glass shower screen but it may help to make the Joles room appear bigger. Kiwi, I didn't want to encroach into the bedrooms if I could help it. I think there at the bare minimum size as it is. I'm not a big fan of the built in. Doozerberry, I've only just discovered the 3way bathroom. I'm not sold on it yet. Thorney, I'll put plenty of cupboards in the laundry. The door in the ensuite has been an on again off again situation. I'd like to here cases for and against. As I've been typing away I've come up with a cople of variations. I'm going to have a cuppa and then I'll put them up. Thanks again for all the imput. Who says committees don't work? Brian Re: Seperate Toilet or not 33Apr 13, 2009 9:19 am After the board got the creativejuices flowing I came up with this. I've added a little bit of room to the width and taken 400mm off the length. This enabled me to put 100mm into each bedroom and 200mm into the toilet. I get a good sized open area in the bathroom. I may be able to put a window at the end of the shower. Brian Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Seperate Toilet or not 34Apr 13, 2009 9:56 am Sorry but I still like the 'Joles' version. The way you have done it is a bit ******* window wise and you are not gaining a great amount of floor space. The 'Joles' version allows for a full length window if you wanted and would let plenty of light in to the vanity area and still allow light in over the top of the shower wall. Just my thoughts. Good luck. Re: Seperate Toilet or not 35Apr 14, 2009 8:34 am klscomps Sorry but I still like the 'Joles' version. Good luck. No need to be sorry for preferring Joles version. I want opinions. I do gain a bit of floor space but it is in other rooms. The toilet goes from 800mm wide to 1000mm and the 2nd bedroom goes from 3200mm wide to 3400mm. I think having a square open area in the bathroom is better than the rectangular look. The window issue you raise is very valid except out side that wall will probably be a water tank or 2 and not a great view or exceptional lighting. With my version I would probably have to put a long skinny window across the top of the shower (10' ceilings). Still thinking. Brian Re: Seperate Toilet or not 36Apr 14, 2009 9:08 am I voted to keep them seperate. For me personally, I don't like toilets in bathrooms (ensuites I'm okay with, just), but not in main bathrooms. If you have guests staying, if someone is using the shower then the other guests can't access the toilet. And people always need to use the toilet when someone is using the shower or the bathroom for other reasons. That would then mean that you would have to be happy about people accessing the toilet in your ensuite, not sure how you feel about it. I think Jo's idea is great, gives you the best of both worlds without sacrificing too much. Looking at some of the designs on websites, they are all selling very similar products. I get that you want something stylish. It's worth looking for search terms like SaveH2O… 2 7008 Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room.
