Terrence Malick Re: gas point to alfresco price 23Apr 13, 2009 7:18 pm fruitty How much did you get charged for a gas point to the alfresco / external area. Our builder H quoted $764 to provide a gas point to the alfresco area (about 10 m away from the kitchen). Does this sound reasonable? Walking through my friend's brother house (at frame stage, with the same builder) I notice that the gas pipe is a yellow plastic pipe running across the ceiling. Do those plastic pipe really cost that much? Hi Guys, We have added 2 gas points inside the house (one at the front in the Formal Lounge and one in the Rumpus at the rear of the house). The total was $200 and there is approx. 25m of the yellow Rehau gas line. It is very unlikely you would need an upgrade to the gas line as the standard flow from a 'normal residential gas meter' is: - Continuous Gas HWS, - Gas Cooktop, - Ducted Gas Heating and - 3 x Gas Points (floor heaters, mushroom heaters, BBQs, etc). If you need more gas suppy the regulator at the meter is adjusted, there is no such thing as a 'pipe upgrade'. I would say that you are being overcharged if you are being billed $764 for a single gas point. I had no idea why they do it, I just know that sometimes they do it and sometimes they don't. Some consistency from these builders would be nice wouldn't it? Sounds like your builder gave you a great price. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Sounds like your builder gave you a great price. Hey mate, I have the added benefit that my father is a Plumber/Gasfitter (but he isn't doing the work on our house as Masterton wouldn't allow it) but he knows the dude that is doing the work. Of course knowing the tradies helps, but sometimes the builder, under contract, charges say $500 for external H&C water connections (capped-off) but the plumber is paid a set fee by the builder of usually only 20% of the charged $500 ($100) and this is often regardless of where the point is located! He did say that Masterton are the fairest of the larger NSW project builders (I paid $300 for 2 sets of them). He did say that this is such a scam in the building industry, some builders charge a 'supply charge' or a 'co-ordination charge' for just informing the gas supplier of the fact that the house is now ready for the meter to be installed! Just sooo wrong...a rort! Now, one thing I didn't clarify in my previous post is if there is no gas already being supplied to the house then $700-odd is a fair price, considering the trenching, connections, meter installation, etc., but I don't think this is the case here(?). Its how he makes his money. If the pipe is to be installed during construction, in the studwork, it should cost approx. $80 for the pipe (allowing for copper which is the most expensive) $40 for other materials and say three hours labour @75 per hour. Using other materials and less time....cheaper, providing alll is straight forward. Around $350 plus GST. Its how he makes his money. Have you bothered to read the thread? The discussion has been about the difference in price between the normal providing of the gas point and the "upgrade" line that builders sometimes charge. No one has complained about it costing a few hundred. It's the ones getting charged $700 or $800 that aren't happy. And yes, we do realise what you said above, we are not idiots. Are all of your posts going to be this condescending from now on? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. A barbie with a big wok ring may increase gas draw a lot. well that was what I was told by the company selling Goldstien burners as the 4 burner is 108mj they said you may need a bigger pipe if you have a gas stove and heaters etc..... I just asked the builder to shift the gas heater to the alfresco since we will use reverse cycle a/c. probably live to regret that decision too....hehe cheers Mark Re: gas point to alfresco price 34Jun 05, 2012 9:00 am Yep mark, that is correct, it has to do with the Mj load. My DH is a plumber/gasfitter we have two hot water services, gas fireplace/gas barbie and gas cooktop, my DH made the builder redo our gas pipe to a larger one. There is a calcultion that is used to determine the thickness of the pipe. Re: gas point to alfresco price 35Jun 05, 2012 9:39 am Ok so in theory if the barbie tips it to the next level the entire run would need to be upgrading hence the variations we are seeing in pricing and I guess the rule of where in doubt go the next size to potentially future proof gas upgrades where additional gas draw would be required. I think it one needs to balance what they sweat over and if the cost is under $500 - $1,000 it is very small likely in comparison to the overall build. I think where the builder adds 25% to the cost of a driveway and the like is what erks me. Thanks for clarifying Gogo....
