Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 21Apr 11, 2009 7:10 pm We have the same NBG wir's and almost changed to bir's as well. We're not in our home yet but I adore them now as WIR's and can already imagine how much kid's stuff they are going to store! I do fully understand why you'd go BIR's though because logically they will hold more. Fi has moved in!! Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 23Apr 11, 2009 7:40 pm For the same amount of storage space - WIR will always require a large footprint than BIR. Same for pantrys. It's fairly logical. The WIR has its own circulation area. BIR share it with the rest of the room. If you are tight for space BIR will get you more storage. Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 24Apr 11, 2009 8:21 pm SuH i am a fan of the WIR myself, we have a bank of drawers shoe shelves open shelving for all my bags and lots of hangins space for moi SuH, I love my WIR too but we are talking more about whether to do them in minor bedrooms. This always gave me grief when I was trying to store a large item and had the room on the actual shelf but had to get it in under the frame. Some very blue language whilst balanced on a ladder trying to figure out how to get the item past the frame!! You don't have this problem with WIR's. Have you got the MDF covered doors or wooden 35-40mm entrance doors & what depth did you go? Are ther 3 or 4 door BIR? I will go with this type with 3-4 doors. Sliding with draws 2.jpg Helyn Good point about bed 3. Will go with the sliding doors. SuH et al I’m planning this, I too like the draws and will have the room to put then in. I think they are a must. Joles Great point, If I go the full length of the room it’s then a no go zone for wall hangings, posters and furniture, good one. Thanks kindly for the helpful input and sharing you ideas. Regards KW…………….. no wait KW, you haven't heard my 2c worth yet !!! I can see the practicality (and more cost effective option) being BIR's. But I'm all about versitility, not just practicality - I want both for my $$$$ So I'd go WIR's every time if I could. The only reason I didn't with my home we are about to build is because the builder wanted to charge me $1,500 PER WIR and that's not including the cost of the sqm on the plan - citing the plastering etc costs add up. Really, they were competitive on most upgrades, but clearly not this one and I had to lose this fight due to financial reasons. AND BTW, it is a resale winner, often boards for sale will state if the home has WIR's to all bedrooms. But next time, if there's a next time, it's a no brainer if I can afford it and I have the space. They are really the two considerations unless you point-blank don't like them. Great for closing off mess, putting in boxes, bags, drawers, shelves, large toys, even a bike - the list goes on and on. Now you can decide KW! Annie A thankful person is a happy person. Or is your wink giving you away ... can't work it out ... yes I'm blonde I vote for WIR as your bedrooms look big enough to be able to lose that amount of floor space. If they were smaller I'd go BIR. We hve BIRs almost identical to that pic you just put up. Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 31Apr 12, 2009 10:05 pm Annie You sound sold on the WIR. Yes, I like them also but I’m being a bit practical. The rooms are already big, so there is not space issue, it just seems a bit of a waist. Why would I want to get changed in a cupboard? I know you can put stuff on the floor but you only have to move it out of the way to get to the other stuff in there. I personally think if ya going to have WIR you have to have a big one, the robe that is. Now, I like the idea in a bedroom with Ens, makes sense. I prefer the walk trough type. I’m thinking about your builder sounds typical. My point to my builder will be “Hey less work, less plaster, minus 1 door lock and 1 light & switch.” It should be cheaper, but I bet I’m told otherwise. What ever as long as I’m happy with the result. This way it will improve storage space and give me about 200-300mm more in the room. As to the mirrors on the doors, sorry not for me, maybe on the ceiling. Lol I may use the room for a hobby type room so all the boys toys can go in there. Will make them a bit deeper for a few shelves and draws. I never thought I would labour over a simple think like a bedroom robe and there is no correct answer to it, just what works for you, hey. This is my first build, I feel like I’m building it myself. This is a great forum to get ideas from one another and share experiences. I’m under the pump from the builder as they what all the changes ASAP like yesterday. Thanks to all. I can't stand those mirrored robe doors. I will go with this type with 3-4 doors. \ They are 3 doors and they are MDF doors, vinyl wrap or whatever they were called. They are about 3-4m long depending on the room and about 80cm deep. I also don't like mirrored doors which is why I went for the MDF. The minor bedrooms in my house are big, I re-sized them so they're all larger than most minor bedrooms so I could have gone the route of WIRs but I really liked the idea of BIRs especially since I will be putting in my own shelving to make it suited to what I need. I don't have any children but I built with my sibling so it's all adults living in the house so this really suited what we wanted. I know the ones you have, yes, it's vinyl wrap. Cool, they come in large sizes. You have a deep robe, 80 cm. I remember you said your brother could walk inside it. I think most are 60 cm. I to will go a bit bigger. Thanks kindly for your reply. By the way I think they look very nice. I do think the doors are a large size because they somewhat overlap each other a little I think. I did the same thing for the linen closet as what I did for the BIR except the linen closet is longer in length. In my opinion, I think it's a good feature for the minor rooms especially when looking towards the future and possible resale especially when you see many family homes with just those little robes with the tiny shelf and rail. Those who have seen them really like it. Built with Commodore Homes - The Fusion completed April 2009 (with modifications) Yes I have moved! They also look high, what hight are they and is your cieling 2.4m (8 foot) or 9 foot. Did you get them yourself or via the builder. Can you tell me what brand they are? You dont have to paint them ether. The linen closet is longer what lenght. My bedroom BIR will be about 3 meter wide so 2 doors at 1.5 would do it. Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 37Apr 13, 2009 10:39 am i two am going against the robe any vote for the wir my son has one he his room but is a big one it is great for storage of bigger items that would not fit in robe , if this room is not going to be used you could used the wir as a walk in lien cupboard i personally think they are great for storage finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 38Apr 13, 2009 12:43 pm King willy Sooty Yes, they look big are they solid or do you think a bit thin? Are you talking about the doors? Obviously being MDF they're not the most solid things, at least not compared to actual wood but they're not thin at all, it's quite thick board they used. I did not have to paint them. They were supplied and installed by the builder, and they had a variety of different colours to choose from and I went with the white board with silver frames. There were other choices such as white frame, cream frame, etc. I think they are Affinity doors. The linen closet is 4 doors so probably about 4 m long because those doors don't overlap.
