Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 10, 2009 9:18 pm Hi, I couldnt find a pets page anywhere so was wondering what everyone has done with their pets while building? We will be staying with relatives in an apartments while our build happens for 6 to 9 months and need to find somewhere for our dog and 2 cats to stay. We were thinking maybe a long term boarding or similar. What has everyone else done? andy_min Building at The Ponds Land reg 3/12/09, Land settled 18/12/09 Approved by Design Panel 16/11/09, Submitted to council 24/11/09, Approved by Council 21/1/10 Site Start 21/5/10 http://andyminpondsbuild.blogspot.com/ https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19800 Re: Where did your pets live while building? 2Apr 10, 2009 9:24 pm 6 - 9 months is a long time for your pets to be in a boarding kennel We have one dog but didn't have this problem as we just lived in our old house until we moved into our new one, we were lucky we could afford to pay construction loan without selling old house first. Re: Where did your pets live while building? 3Apr 10, 2009 9:26 pm I was going to say the same thing. You'd have to go and see them frequently and it would be expensive. Do you have a relative that would mind them for you? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Where did your pets live while building? 4Apr 10, 2009 9:27 pm I was lucky enough that my partners parents are able took after our doggies whilst we are building. Have a labrador x sharpei and he is the cutest little boy ever. And a cattle x staffy. We are staying my my father whilst building to cut down on rental costs. Dad doesnt have room at his place for animals. so we are quite lucky dh parents can. Miss them though. I would always try and family member or friend to look after them first and go to boarding as a last resort Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! Now tackling the HUGE task of the Garden- viewtopic.php?f=31&t=14782 Re: Where did your pets live while building? 5Apr 10, 2009 9:29 pm We are living in a small townhouse... my mum, my invalid brother, my son, me..... 3 big dogs, two cats. I also had my other brother's two cats here while he built. We thought we'd be here around 8 months... 18 months later...... We have just found a way to manage. It hasn't been easy, but we've done it. Sorry if this sounds really nosey, but if you are staying with relatives in an apartment to save money, quite honestly, once you factor in the cost of full time board for three animals, you may as well rent somewhere. Boarding isn't all that cheap. Another option is private boarding with someone from your community. Like long term dog/cat sitting. Ask your vet they may know someone. If any of your animals are pure bred and were bought from a breeder, the breeder may take them on as boarders while you build. Most reputable breeders are happy to help out in such circumstances. Try dogzonline.... place an ad... someone may offer private in-home boarding. See homeone.... told you we needed a pets forum! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Where did your pets live while building? 6Apr 10, 2009 9:31 pm We were lucky and unlucky. Lucky because our temporary residence is my mum's house (she'd gone into aged care and we hadn't yet sold it). So no problem with our three dogs - our two beagles and mums dog we inherited. Unlucky because the house is on a main road and one beagle tried unsuccessfully to negotiate the traffic when they escaped the day after we moved here. Thought we had exits covered, but didn't notice that the cable guy had disturbed one of them. Our daughter's cat is currently being spoilt rotten by my mother-in-law, he lives with the in-laws at their retirement village. Good luck with your non-human family members. Definitely cant take them with us in a 4th floor 3 br apartment with a no pets rule but I would love to see my border collie doing laps on the balcony Cant afford to rent and build and very lucky to have people offer to house us for a few months. Don't really want to board them and my Mum who does have room is saying no for now. She might cave later but I would like to have other options just in case she doesnt change her mind. If you talk to the boarding ppl/kennel ppl they will usually do you a cheaper rate for a long stay. We had used this place before, the owner I think loved my puss cat more than I did even though she was not a friendly cat, so I was completely comfortable with leaving her there. At the last minute we had friends in the country offer to look after her for just the cost of food so we didn't have to do it in the end. Re: Where did your pets live while building? 10Apr 11, 2009 11:15 am We have been fortunate enough to take our cat along with us. We are living in my Mum and Dad's unit, and the cat has settled in really well. I was pretty scared to start off with, as it's quite a busy street, and there are a few tom cats around. For the first 4 weeks she was bunkered in the WIR, and wouldn't venture out much at all. It will be interesting to see what happens when we move back home to a new house. She is very familiar with the street, neighbours etc, but the house will be completely different! She is now 13 1/2, and will love to sit in our floor level MB window on the second storey looking down on the world! She adjusts well to change, as we take her with us when we go to the holiday house on the Mornington Peninsula. She is not phased at all by the hour log car journey either! Fingers crossed she will be fine when we move again! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! My first suggestion would be to search google for "pet sitting" I know there are people who will do that at your house eg if your were going on holidays etc. However, they may also be people who will temporarily foster animals and still allow you to visit them. Second option would be the long term boarding as you suggested. Although a lot more expensive however you could negotiate the rates if all your pets stay at the one place and you can visit them frequently too. My 2 cats always go to a cattery when we go away and they get so spoilt that they never want to come home Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Where did your pets live while building? 12May 18, 2009 9:37 pm Hi, I need to revive this topic as I have just sold my house and now have 6 weeks to find somewhere for the dog and 2 cats to live while the build happens. Expecting to be in mid December, maybe earlier. So it is about 6 months all up. My Mum who was the only possible option has given me a definite NO! It would be great to have them all together in one place. Does anyone know of someone who does pet sitting in their own home? We live in Western Sydney and would prefer to have the animals near so we can visit them as often as possible. I would like to start looking for somewhere for their "holiday" now and not leave it too late. They might be able to help you out with someone who would consider a longer term basis. Was your dogs breeder any help? I know mine is happy to take her back if we ever need to! A few other places you might be able to put adds up for someone - dog groomers, obedience clubs, etc. If you have to go with a stranger, you'd probably be best leaving them with someone who is at least a minder for a company though, I'd be so worried if I had to leave my girl with strangers! That's the problem with building it isn't always accurate so prepare yourself for that. We now live here in a 10sq square house with 3 birds (cockatoo, log billed corella and a rainbow lorikeet) 2 Dogs (lab and english staffy) and 2 guinea pigs. God bless my father in law for putting up with all our pets and 3 kids. We have taken over the house. He must be I hope you find somewhere soon. You could also try the RSPCA.
