Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 07, 2009 10:00 pm I am a cabinet maker and would like to put my own kitchen in ... have been talking to builders Eden Brae, Clarendon and McDonald Jones but they have all said they cannot allow me to do it. It seems pretty unfair... they claim it is to do with Work Cover Insurance or something... has anyone any ideas how to overcome this Trust in the Universe Re: Putting own Kitchen in..builder says no !! 2Apr 07, 2009 10:55 pm perhaps if you offer to do it after handover when the property is not longer subject to contractual terms? Can you do that or would it be to difficult with the other finishes requires such as tiling, painting, plumbing etc? I'm sure you must be able to delete the entire kitchen - but would this still work for you? Are you mates with a plumbing who could help you out with the plumbing post handover? anthea Re: Putting own Kitchen in..builder says no !! 3Apr 07, 2009 11:02 pm My best mate is a plumber so that wouldn't be a problem..and I could do the tiling as well...would need an electrician and a painter... seems hard work to think about... not too sure about leaving it out and doing it after settlement... wonder how that would effect my bank/loan... just can't understand why these builders are so adament about it Trust in the Universe Re: Putting own Kitchen in..builder says no !! 4Apr 07, 2009 11:09 pm We're building with Coral Homes and they had NO problem at all with us taking out our kitchen and BYO one from elsewhere. They even happily offered a....$1200 credit!! As a better alternative for us, we swapped kitchens with another house plan they offer for very little extra. I don't know why those builders wouldn't let you do it. Let them know it's a deal breaker and see how willing to negotiate they are then. You could always talk to Coral Homes in your area, confirm that they'd do it there and then if you still prefer one of those other builders go back and ask why CH will do it but they wont. As anthea said, you could always do it after hand over. Good luck with it. Re: Putting own Kitchen in..builder says no !! 5Apr 07, 2009 11:11 pm the builders you mentioned seem like big project builders. I think you need to try a smaller builder who has more flexibility... Couldnt do it ourselves due to WorkCover or what not, and they wouldnt give us credit for it either. So we were left with the option of paying for it, getting it done and ripping it out or paying for it and not getting it done One of the many reasons we've decided against a Project Builder.
