Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 04, 2009 11:04 pm Hi All, We are building our first home with big M. We have a made some changes to kitchen layout and are a bit confused as to how this would look as they haven't got it in any of their displays. Would really appreciate your comments. Original plan: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Modified plan: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Our concerns are: 1. the space for the fridge in the modified plan - whether the wall should be flush with the hallway wall and 2. whether this new layout will look good at all. the only reason why we came up with this was coz we upped the size of cooker and rangehood to 900mm instead of 600 mm the working space on both sides of cooker was left 900mm each which we thought was a bit small, so moved the fridge next to island bench and now we have 1400mm space on both sides of the cooker. Would welcome any suggestions. thanks. Thanks. Btw nice plan and smart thinking regarding the work area on kitchen bench. Land Settled 27/04/09. Site Started 30/4/09. Slab poured 21/5/09. Frame up 27/5/09. But how do you think mine would look as now you have this wall (fridge space), not aligned with anything, staring at you. and if it will look ok, should this be flush with the entry hallway wall to give it some uniformity. OR maybe we should just go with the original plan. Thanks. Malik Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 5Apr 04, 2009 11:26 pm i agree with jessica - it will look odd with it not flush...another interesting idea is to put a bulkhead running across from the fridge space and along the length of the bench - downlights or pendants can create a really nice look with a feature bulkhead, as per link... http://www.watersunhomes.com.au/store/v ... dProduct=7 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 6Apr 04, 2009 11:30 pm yep, if you are going with modified you will either need to bring the pantry wall back in line with the fridge space or extend both the fridge space & the brekkie car to sit flush with the pantry wall... 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 7Apr 04, 2009 11:37 pm Thanks for the replies guys. Jessica - thanks for that. I think I will email my CSC to make that fridge space flush to the pantry wall. Jess - That bulkhead is really a very good idea. will talk to builder to see if we can do it and how much it will cost. That kitchen looks really nice tho, wife always wanted a L shaped kitchen but in our floor plan there is not enough space for that, that's why our SC came up with this idea of extending work area. Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 8Apr 05, 2009 9:01 am malik, there are heaps of M3tricon homes on display where they have done this. Your house is a Santorini?? I can't think of a Santorini with this on display, but a number of their homes that have the galley kitchen have turned the fridge as you have. I can think of these off the top of my head. They all have the bulkhead as well. The Grandview at Caroline Springs. (Image 12 on the website) The Fairhaven at Melton. (Image 6) The Chelsea at Lyndhurst (Image 2) Most of them have built the wall out a little to make it flush, but they also look to have increased the depth of the bench to match it. I don't think you necessarily have to make it flush. Without hallway doors, the step in sort of defines coming into the living space. But to make it flush with the hall wall would also increase you fridge space, and, depending on your fridge, that could be agood thing. Either would work. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 9Apr 05, 2009 10:39 am Hi Joles, Thanks for your input. You actually took the time to look at other displays, so really Thank You! Yes, you are right, this is santorini! M's designer homes - grandview, lumeah, fairheaven all have the fridge space in the pantry so they still have space around both ends of the island bench, while with what we have done, there will be only one entry into kitchen and then you have this extended wall out of sync with everything else. I think functionally it solves the problem, but we were concerned whether from aesthetics point of view, we should do it or not. But with all you good people's inputs, we are hoping to move in the righ direction . Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 10Apr 05, 2009 10:42 am Yeah, but they display them with only one entry into the kitchen as you are doing it. Have you checked the pics? We nearly built the Grandview, the Caroline Springs one is not displayed to plan, it is changed like yours as are the other two I mentioned. They have just removed the pantry doors. I'd keep it as you are doing , but apart from that, it's the same set up you are planning. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 11Apr 05, 2009 10:52 am Hi - really nice house. Just a few thoughts - if you go with the modified, do make the fridge wall flush with the entry - will look more integrated like it was meant to be there. But depending on your family two entries to kitchen can be very good for traffic and flow ie whilst someone cooking can still access fridge and pantry etc (esp kids!) and also adding that fridge block closes the kitchen up. Is it possible to steal 30cm from the dining and make the original kitchen longer so you get 1050 either side of cooker and the island would be a foot longer too? The modified will work well but look at lots of pics and real kitchens and make sure you are really happy because it will affect look of whole room that you will use the most in the house. Good luck with your new house it will be beautiful Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 12Apr 05, 2009 11:22 am Hi there Malik, having a look at your plan and I see your WIL is what is behind your pantry and its just next to your garage. But its not near your bedrooms where you need to access your linnen or near your laundrey where you generally put your stuff away. Would it be pheasible to 1. add a built in linen next to your washing machine area 2. Reduce the size of your WIL to be useable for things such as a vacuum or general items rather than a walk in. Remember you now have storage in your laundrey. 3. increase the size of your pantry and move your fridge back to the back wall so to not close in your kitchen. Aesthetically as you were saying I think looking in to your kitchen it may end up feeling darker with the fridge in that new position and your also blocking your view out of the kitchen. You could add the fridge at the start of your kitchen next to the entrance of your bedrooms and move your cook top down towards the pantry and then on the otherside line up your sink with your cooktop. This will also give your more benchspace on the sink side. With a bigger pantry you can still store things other than food aswell.....like tablecloths, teatowels some of the things you may have stored in your WIL. Generally your kitchen becomes the hub of your family so I would consider making it as easy and workable for you as possible....you can end up spending alot of time there Goodluck with your plans they look great. Re: Need help with kitchen layout - comments welcome! 13Apr 05, 2009 5:58 pm Thanks for all your inputs. Joles - you are right, I actually visited their tarneit display today and chelsea has the same layout too as the grandview you mentioned. so we are more or less decided we will go with the modified plan with fridge wall flush to pantry. we love the grandview too but was beyond our budget and also santorini was better from the point of view of orientation towards sun (i loved jasper too). bluesteel - thanks for your suggestion. we actually did look at extending the dining area so we could have more space in the kitchen but the cost of that is prohibitive. gweluphome - wow, that's really excellent thought, wish we could make all these changes especially the linen cupborad idea as it makes such good sense. You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 15610 Tradie may sit at home but will need to get house plastered as well or will you sit it out? 6 9974 Hi, We're building a double-storey in Perth and I'm undecided with the kitchen sink situation.
