Porter Davis - Site Access

Hopefully some of the PD building people can help!

We hope to be able to run some cable for speakers etc through the house before the plaster etc goes up. The PD people always say on the record that you arent allowed to do anything on site - (technically not even access the site) - but off the record its ok, just work something out with your supervisor!

Have any of you guys done anything like this and has it been a problem at all??

My understanding is that is really does depend on your site supervisor. If you check Amber's Blog, you'll see that they were able to put some wires in before the plaster went up.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has come across a site supervisor who has denied access to the house?

Depends totally on your supervisor.

We were able to go in & put in extra insulation before the plastering went in. It was no problem...in fact, our supervisor even suggested it.

I wasnt allowed to wire it, but I was able to put rope in to pull it through.

Hi guys, we were up front with our supervisor and asked him if we could do it. He basically said that even though the 'rules' state that we are not allowed on site, what happens when they are not on site is out of their control. He was fine with us being on site and doing it, just said to be careful that's all.

We also put in extra insulation into the walls while we were there.

Vanderlay - just a word of warning. If you are going to pre-cable, make sure you do it all at the same time. We had the problem that we didn't quite finish off what we needed to do, went back a few days later to finish off and all of the plaster was up!!!!! Now we are scratching our heads wondering how the heck we are going to finish off one of the cables we need to do!

Can't speak for Amber, but we are looking at doing something similar- One of us works shifts, and the idea is to try and reduce the noise coming from the rest of the house.

We are also putting in a room which will act as a home theatre, and I think the sound quality will be better if we line the walls in that room, as well as providing some noise barrier from the theatre to the rest of the house.

We already had soundcheck plaster & additional soundproof insulation in the walls of our home theatre but they don't insulate between floors in a double story house. So we went in & put additional insulation in the roof of the home theatre & the master bedroom to cut down the noise between floors.

Your upstairs carpet underlay does trap a lot of noise but hubby & I are noise nazis & we think anything to reduce noise levels is worthwhile.

We actually put insulation right around the laundry as well.

At the time of planning it didn't occur to us, but once the frame went up we were standing in the family room (where the main TV watching will be done) and noticed that behind the wall where the TV will be is a hallway and then the laundry.

So we decided that the last thing we would want is to hear the washing machine or dryer going while we're watching SG1, NCIS or some other geeky show that we watch so we decided to insulate the laundry and the wall between the 2 rooms.

Out of interest, is it not common to insulate everywhere? We had soundproofing insulation put in throughout the house, so don't know which areas would have had insulation normally & which wouldn't as everything (except between the floors) was insulated.

We also had double glazing put in in every room at the front of the house to reduce noise off the street. Hubby wanted it on every window but the expense wasn't worth it (given our layout & placement of windows), so we just did the front.

WoW!

Usual 5 star standard today in Victoria or (normal minimum) is insulation in exterior walls and ceiling.Internal walls that is between bedrooms etc do not have any treatment as a rule except the plaster sheet.

Really??! Back home in NZ it's common for internal walls to have insulation...one assumes because of the colder winters. No wonder the house we're renting at the moment seems so noisy!!!
