Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 28, 2009 10:45 pm hey all.... Ok..so what would you choose with this design..... Our builder is charging $300 per sqm for an alfresco PLUS $80 per sqm for the slab....so $380 total..... The size of our pergola/alfresco area is approx 44sqm ( 6.3m x 7.0m ).... so a total around $16700!!! Theres no denying the look and flow through effect on our design SHOULD look great...but is it worth the money...?? Im guessing around 10k will get us a slighlty bigger pergola (see plan) that would extend over the other marked area making it about 64sqm total (6.3 x 10.2) without any concrete/tiling work though..... so say 10-14k finished.... What would you do....??? If both done in similar colours - you may not even notice the transition. After 4 years - we're in! Re: What would you do...alfresco for 16k or pergola for less..?? 3Mar 29, 2009 5:56 am consider the orientation of your house. which way us north? we have a north facing alfresco and are choosing not to have any roof over it (for the moment at least) as we don't want to lose all the lovely natural light that comes in through the windows lighting, and warming, up the inside. Re: What would you do...alfresco for 16k or pergola for less..?? 4Mar 29, 2009 8:03 am Im running with the alfresco personally, dont want the hassle of putting in a pergola, i think its a bit nicer looking, but thats just me. It will then have the same lighting and ceiling fans as the rest of the house. Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. It'll cost us about $16k once we tile it ourselves after handover but it will just have that amazing outdoor room flow on effect from the house. Lighting, fans etc. Gorgeous! So yes it's worth the money Re: What would you do...alfresco for 16k or pergola for less..?? 6Mar 29, 2009 8:42 am If your estimate for the cost of a pergola is right, and you add on the cost if paving or decking, then your al fresco quote is extremely reasonable. And as buildingadreamhome said, you get a flow-on effect that just looks great. Plus you can have integrated lighting added, instead of having to have add-on lights with visible cabling. Pergolas can be good in the right situation, and if you want maximum light through those rear windows, then that might be a better option, unless you can have some sort of skylight in your al fresco ceiling? I wish your broken record would just break I think there are many "1993 style" pergolas which are painted and have a shadecloth roof that fit under that category. But these days a lot of them are stained instead of painted and have things like skylights, a colorbond roof or laserlite, reed under the roof and proper guttering. I think when they are built like that they look really great and modern! To answer the thread question... we are having both as we felt it was too expensive to extend the alfresco. So we will have the standard alfresco that comes with the house (approx 3 x 4m) and will add a timber stained pergola attached to that which will run down the whole of the west side of the house. We will have the reed underneath the clear roof which looks great and gives it a nice tropical feel. We got that idea from the many display houses that we looked at. As previously mentioned, it depends on your budget and what you like. Personally, I think either will look great and it won't look like an add on if the floor is consistent. Will give you a balance of weatherproof outdoor room while still allowing plenty of light to enter too. -------------------------------------------------------- Building in Highlands Craigieburn Status: Building the Laundryless 25.5: Slab Complete at most it will have a short lintel which could be moved up just below the ceiling or even above.
