Browse Forums Building A New House Re: starting to build new home in western suburbs,VIC,any advise 2Mar 27, 2009 5:11 pm Burbank built the house next door to us. We have been building since June last year and we are still not finished. The guy next door has moved in. So there ya go! Contracts in March 2008 and no end in sight yet. Re: starting to build new home in western suburbs,VIC,any advise 3Mar 28, 2009 8:09 pm burbank have been slow getting to contract, hope they are quicker now. There is a stipulation on the contract called liquidated damages, hope that is mentioned on ur contract where the builder agrees to pay u rent if building not completed on time. Re: starting to build new home in western suburbs,VIC,any advise 4Mar 29, 2009 10:48 am How imp is it to get the independent building inspection done at each major stage of construction, have been checking on cost , they range from $290-$400 per stage , is it worth it ?? any suggestions on any good building inspectors? Re: starting to build new home in western suburbs,VIC,any advise 5Mar 29, 2009 11:00 am We didn't use an inspector (didn't build with Burbank either), but probably should have. Still, since we lived nearby, we were able to keep a close eye on construction and picked up plenty of problems ourselves. If you can afford the cost, I'd recommend an independent inspector. As for Burbank, they're building the house next door to us. It got to lock-up very quickly and is now plastered inside and rendered outside. The slab was poured a few days before Christmas, then obviously there was a four-week break before anything else happened, but the frame, roof, brickwork and plaster have all been completed in about 8 or 9 weeks. The quality looks no better or worse than any volume builder, and I have to say that the site supervisor is there frequently with tape measure, level and paperwork in hand. Which is more than I can say for our build.... Re: starting to build new home in western suburbs,VIC,any advise 6Mar 29, 2009 1:43 pm We used Kevin Jennings Building Services. Their inspector turned up when he said he would and we were happy with his assessment. He walked us around the building afterward and we'll get the written one this week. It will cost $440, once I get around to paying them. They are based in Coburg and seem to be able to get anywhere in Melbourne. http://www.kevinjennings.com.au/ Contracts in March 2008 and no end in sight yet. Re: SOLAR PANELS for Generating Electricity,burnside-vic 7Mar 30, 2009 8:45 am Thanks for the advise on building inspections , I think I will get them done, another query regarding solar panels for generating electricity. seeing lot of adv for solar panels , the latest one I saw was selling 1Kw system for $2500. Is anybody thinking of putting one of these or has already installed one, want to know if I should be investing in them. while doing some research on net, found that 1Kw would not be able to supply the entire household needs anyway(3 bedroom), so you have to look at 1.5Kw or 2Kw, which would be close to $6-$8000. any thoughts on this Hi all, We are looking to build a new two storey house in western Sydney.
