Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 27, 2009 11:41 am Could a kind soul please explain to me whether sarking under roof tiles is a good thing to have? Our specification originally included sarking to the entire roof. We have now had the final specifications back with exclude it. When I queried this I was told that our chosen roof tiles (Monier - Elabama) do not require sarking. The thing is, I *thought* (probably wrong) that sarking is a sort of sheet underneath the tiles and that it was a good thing to have it??? Should I ask our builder to put it back in (even though our roof tiles don't require it)? I should add we are building in WA and in a coastal location (about 800-1000m from the ocean and requiring various special coastal specification type things done to the house). Thanks Gina Re: Sarking (under roof tiles) 2Mar 27, 2009 11:44 am Our builder originally had Monier's Elabana range as their standard - and they are correct. Monier states that there is no requirement for sarking under that range. Monier's range only starts requiring sarking on the really flat profile tiles. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Sarking (under roof tiles) 3Mar 27, 2009 12:48 pm yea we are having the monier traditional roof tiles and it was recommended that we used sarking under then because they are quite flat profile John, Tarin and the Kids Built and moving in to the Regent Grande with Masterton homes http://thebrownsaremovingtothecountry.blogspot.com Re: Sarking (under roof tiles) 4Mar 27, 2009 2:17 pm It is very useful. Acts as a barrier to water comming into your roof cavity from broken tiles etc. Also stops a degree of heat coming off your tile and into your roof cavity. The builder, if they install it, should also install an extraction method of some description (eg Whirlybird with eave vents). Hope that helps. Re: Sarking (under roof tiles) 5Mar 27, 2009 4:59 pm Sarking is a great insulator to help reduce heating/cooling bills. Apparently, it also has great fire protection. I can't help you with the monier tiles and saking but I would be suggesting to get it for the above benifits anyway. Re: Sarking (under roof tiles) 6Mar 27, 2009 5:05 pm A friend has those tiles and he didn't get sarking but now wishes he had. He had a broken tile and the rain leaking in damaged his ceiling. He said if he had sarking the water would have run down it instead and not caused so much damage. I have to have it as a bushfire requirement. It cost about $2200 for a 28 square home with my builder. I have no idea about it's insulation properties but I'm glad it's there anyway Building Standards; Getting It Right!
