Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 26, 2009 3:48 pm I had my tile appointment today. It cost me over 13k and I'm now drinking........steadily. Oh we are not having any feature tiles. This is only for floor tiles. And it's only the upgrade price. We get flooring in the promo. Tiles to hall, family, meals and kitchen in addition to the standard wet areas. I had already added extra tiling to the mud room and other areas at tender. The only bit I added today was the rear hall that the poll was about. For those that built with PD you'll know the side wall at selections is the upgrade wall and it basically starts from cheapest and goes to most expensive. Our tile was middleish... but closer to the cheaper end. So in effect, 13k just to upgrade the floor tile. I know I selected it and I have to wear it... yaddah, yaddah. But I don't like beige. Or chocolate. Or cream. And that apparently makes me evil and I have to sell my soul in order to have a different colour. Because anything cheaper than this price.... those "colours" were my only option. Sorry Hels and Greg, I'm not trying to be negative. I'm just honestly in shock. I can only slightly sympathise with you, i did not want any of the beige colors they offered either. Although i found my upgrades tiles in the cheapest section of the upgrade, so the costs were bearable. Would it perhaps be a better option for your to do get the tiling done after handover? Maybe that would work out cheaper and you could still be happy with colors. Do you have pics of what you did choose? Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 3Mar 26, 2009 3:59 pm I'm going to talk to someone. I'm more than happy to pay for an upgrade. I don't often sook about prices. But the standard price for this tile is $40 pm. I understand that there is laying charges and builder's margins, etc. But the upgrade cost is $65 pm. So even allowing for $80 pm laid for the tile.... that means the standard allowance is $15 pm laid.... and that is utterly ridiculous. I just want a justification for it. I will talk to someone about it and we may just delete the flooring and do it ourselves. I'm happy to pay a few thousand over the odds.... but not this. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 5Mar 26, 2009 4:10 pm Porcelain. Charcoal floors and beigey walls in all the bathrooms and laundry, with a feature tile in the bathrooms. I did pay an upgrade so that the bathrooms will be tiled to the ceiling though. I hope you can work out a cheaper way of getting what you want. Judie Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 13Mar 26, 2009 4:51 pm That price is unbelievable! We had carpets in the promotion and really didnt want carpets in the main area.. So we paid for the tiles. Sadly you dont get any credits if you take out a promotional item.... e.g we thought that they could at least give us the cost of the carpet (promo) back.. but no that sux.. but its life.. What was annoying was that we paid extra to have a timber floor step up in the kitchen, yet the promotion gave us free tiles to the kitchen.. We wanted to move those free tiles from the kitchen to the meals considering they wouldn't be laying stuff under the step anyway.. But alas that can't be done.. Although 'promotions' are good if you dont want to change anything, once you do change stuff, they begin to loose value very fast! -------------------------------------------------------- Building in Highlands Craigieburn Status: Building the Laundryless 25.5: Slab Complete Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 15Mar 26, 2009 5:10 pm Far out thats a lot... Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 16Mar 26, 2009 5:16 pm oh yikes! that's a lot .. i think we were quoted something like $7k for the ground floor (covers hallway, dining, kitchen, family, laundry way) for porcelian 6x6 tiles .. supplied n laid!! ofcourse this was an external company that we'll use once the house is done .. i'd be too fainted to grab a beer! --- I don't have a signature - just this sentence saying that I don't have one - that'll do! Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 17Mar 26, 2009 5:19 pm Hi Jo This must be a very frustrating process to get through. I know you can’t settle for 2nd best as these tiles are probably the feature of your house. I would definitely not compromise on this at all. What I would be inclined to do is get them laid after handover but.....then you have the next issue of 'will they tack on architraves or not' debate with them. I can see it getting expensive and messy again. I suppose this is where they are making their money, on the very nice extras. I would get a quote to see how much a tiler would charge to lay the tiles and how much it would cost to buy them yourself. See if it’s financially worth it. That is a lot of money 13k Mrs B Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 18Mar 26, 2009 5:34 pm How many sqm are you tiling? We found that PD's prices for tiles were way over the top. We took in a tile on our appt day that we got from Beaumonts (they have like a clearance area at their shop somewhere around Dandenong) and matched it to one of NT's. We could have paid $8500 to an outsider to do it, NT cost was $18k and that was for 92 or 100 sqm. So you are building with PD now? Happy at Home Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 19Mar 26, 2009 5:37 pm OMG That is a lot of money for tiles for an upgrade !! Ouch !!! Is the selection not that great, or just nothing that you like ?? As others have said, I would look at getting it done privately, that just seems insane ! They must be one hell of a tile! I guess if you have the money and love the tile and nothing else compares, then I guess you stick with it. I'd be looking elsewhere though first before signing any selection contract...... Re: PD tiles appointment has left me shellshocked. 20Mar 26, 2009 5:45 pm It's shockingly shocking, and I thought I was exaggerating with the tiles price. We went to National Tiles few weeks ago and were told that it'd cost us $46/sqm to upgrade into Cat3 tiles for areas included in the promotion. The cost is $112/sqm for areas not covered by the promotion. I got back home and made the following spreadsheet. After reading your post Jo, I believe that the figures I got are quite realistic. Let me know if you need a copy of the sheet, I could send it to you as an Excel file.
