Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 24, 2009 11:09 am This is a little bit of the floorplan of the house. The kid's playroom and bedrooms will be carpet and the gallery and dining area will be tiles. The obvious place to have the carpet and tiles meet is at the opening from the gallery into the bedroom/play area. The problem is I'm a big fan of being able to get to a toilet from outside without going on carpet. Good for kids and BBQ's. Easy to clean the tiles and no need to be constantly getting people to take their shoes off. So I want the little area outside the powder room to be tiled. Will it look weird for the line where the tiles meets the carpet to be angled between the two walls? (option 1) Or should it be more evenly defined? (option 2) Or should the tiles extend up to the other bedrooms? (option 3) The tiles are a much more expensive option than the carpet but still within budget. All opinions welcome. OPTION 1 http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/tiles1.jpg OPTION 2 http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/tiles3.jpg OPTION 3 http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/tiles2.jpg I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 2Mar 24, 2009 11:17 am This is a hard one I personally wouldnt want tiles to the whole hallway... but my dad has this and realistically, its not too bad.... Its just that it can be cold underfoot when going to the bathroom in the morning. I cant imagine liking the finish of Option two either.Option one seems to be better but I think it would possibly look a little weird looking out to the rest of the hallway being carpeted? Actually, Im leaning to Option 3 now... You know what? Im completely confused. Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 3Mar 24, 2009 11:26 am I went option 2 but I would flip the line diagonally so that the tiles weren't encroaching into the play area 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Option 3 keeps the carpet where it is less likely to be damaged (from water in the bathroom) and also if you keep the carpet in the whole playroom, the area along the right hand wall will become worn out very quickly, seeing that is the most direct route to and from the bedrooms. Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 6Mar 24, 2009 11:32 am Can't stop laughing at what Bam wrote, nice work! But I'm in a bit of agreeance here. I also had troubles trying to find where to stop tiles and start carpet. I voted for number two. Basically, I would've voted for Option 1 for sure had the angle been parallel with the angle of the other opening, but because it isn't, then I'd say it might look uneven (almost like a mistake had occurred) - maybe not that bad in person but I cant picture it. I don't mind having tiles in a hall, but having tiles through that area it sort of cuts off that kids retreat, giving the impression that its smaller - this was the clincher for us not to do tiles through our hallway. By having the same material in that whole area it extends the living space and looks bigger to the eye. So no for me to option 3. I don't think Option 2 will look bad or out of place or anything, so thats my 2 cents. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 7Mar 24, 2009 11:44 am Bam, I'm as confused as you! Thorney, only one child and he's 10. If there was more or younger I'd tile the whole playroom I think! ICK, there's just no obvious place to end it. I'm almost wishing I'd extended Bed 2 into the playrrom a little to even up the opening. Lisanne, I don't quite get what you mean. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 8Mar 24, 2009 11:50 am I voted for option 3. I'm not necessarily a big fan of tiles in the hallway, but I wouldn't want carpet directly outside of my bathroom. I find so much water outside of our bathroom that I am glad we have never had carpet there. I think it will look good as a defined area as well, will make a nice feature. I can't understand how I can make a decision when it comes to other peoples houses, but none when it comes to my own. Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 9Mar 24, 2009 11:52 am I went with option 1, but only on the basis that if you have a little wall coming out of the kids retreat to match the length of the hallway wall, then you can have the carpet/tile line straight?! Does that make sense? I like option 3 as it looks symmetrical, but like ICK said, it might make the room appear smaller? Like Bam, I just dont know. I'm confusing myself. This is a hard question! If there was more or younger I'd tile the whole playroom I think! I was going to suggest this, is there any reason you don't want to tile the whole playroom? You could put a nice big rug in the middle and you wouldn't have the issue of where to stop the tiling. I think that'd have a nice flow about it. I really just want everyone more confused and to start choosing option 4! Photogirl, I totally agree with you - isn't it so easy when its not your own house!! Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 12Mar 24, 2009 11:56 am I'm not this biggest fan of carpet, in fact I only like it in bedrooms. I'd tile the hallway for cleaning purposes. It will look so much cleaner long term, especially as hallways get used alot. I vote for 3. I'd tile the playroom too... Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 13Mar 24, 2009 11:57 am Option 1 is exactly how you would put it for that type of doorway. Option 2 is VERY wrong! Option 3 would depend if the wall is taken out like in the plan. So I guess it depends which way you are going in design? I didn’t vote for any, to me you need to know first which way the design will be. WE are doing the same upstairs (but using timber instead of tiles), where we have carpetted areas in all bedrooms, but timber to hallways and leisure area. Option 1&2, IMO would look weird. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping!
