Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 21Mar 24, 2009 12:13 pm option 3.. which is what I am having.. but I am doing it because my toilet comes off the hallway and currently in my rental the hallway is carpeted and gets dirty when people don't take their shoes off to go to the toilet. But option 1 will also give you this.. so depends if you prefer to have a row of tiles down the hall or carpet. Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 22Mar 24, 2009 12:17 pm Michelle joles Michelle Option 1 is exactly how you would put it for that type of doorway. Option 2 is VERY wrong! Option 3 would depend if the wall is taken out like in the plan. So I guess it depends which way you are going in design? I didn’t vote for any, to me you need to know first which way the design will be. Which wall are you meaning? The design is the same in all three... which wall am I taking out?? I'm confused! Go back and look at the kids play room designs..... Option 1 & 2….have walls???? Option 3…..NO hall wall?????? Huh?? Where is the wall?? They are exactly the same because I used the same for all three.... the only difference is the red lines. I'm really confused. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 23Mar 24, 2009 12:18 pm hi Jo, I'm going for option 3 - tile the whole hallway. I'm not a big fan of carpets in hallways as they wear more quickly. Yes it will make the play room area a bit smaller but I would sacrifice this. I also like the tiling all the play room option and put a rug down for warmth but seems like you've ruled this out. So option 3. If you don't want to do this, I like someone else's idea of putting in a little tiny wall from the bedroom 3 wall into the play room so you could have a straight cut-off. Mich are getting confused by Jo's red lines which are showing where they carpet could end and the tiles start? They're not walls! Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 24Mar 24, 2009 12:20 pm I would go for option 3, I think it would be alot easier to keep clean and wear better, especially outside the bathroom. Personally I wouldn't have carpet in a hallway but if you really wanted carpet there I woud go for option 1 Sonya Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 25Mar 24, 2009 12:27 pm joles Huh?? Nothing like looking into to something more than I should!!! Option 3!!!! I'm happy that you are taking notice of my posts! Well it looks like option 3 is winning. It's always the most expensive option that wins! Terrence Malick Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 28Mar 24, 2009 12:36 pm Yep, after much thought (whilst I was making a very yummy lunch) I voted 3 too. It looks much neater. joles It's always the most expensive option that wins! If you wanted to make it a bit more expensive , you could put in undertile heating on a timer, so your t**s don't freeze off in the mornings. I don't like tiled hallways to bedrooms unless it is near a front door and leading into an area with more tiles. A lot of the display homes I have looked at have carpet and tiles meeting on an angle and it is quite acceptable. FYI I don't have any angles like this in my house so I am not being influenced by this but purely what I would do in your circumstances. Perhaps have a think about what family/friends have in their homes and try to think honestly about what you think of those situations. Like everybody else on this forum only you can decide what you actually like the look of as we are all different and working to different agendas. Good luck, it isn't easy to decide and sometimes it is only after living with something we realise we would have preferred it like something else. Anybody in Melbourne who has a crystal ball???? LOL Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 31Mar 24, 2009 1:58 pm Option 1 for me. Visually, the playroom will look bigger with a solid floor cover whatever it is. The different floor covering will make it look like two smaller areas. I found this in the Illoura displays where one display had a step down to carpet and a hallway with timber and the other had a consistent floor covering. I could not believe that the rooms were the same size! Plus I like that the floor coverings help define and delineate the areas inside the home. Option 2 would drive me nuts. I'd have to move a wall to get it symetrical because I would go bonkers everytime I looked at it. I would hate the long join between the carpet and tiles in option 3. The carpet would wear at different rates along the join where you would get the foot traffic and p me off. So 1, 3 and then if I moved a wall 2. Weird I know but if we were all the same how boring would that be! Cheers J Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 32Mar 24, 2009 4:31 pm Whoa.. lots of good ideas coming out here.. I opted for option 3, only because i didnt like 1 or 2 which probably isnt the best way to choose something. I like the ease of cleaning tiles, but think that having tiles all the way up the hallway will make the play area feel smaller? Although it also might help the kids keep thier toys out of the hallway, which will make it easier to keep the flow of the hall open. I like the idea of wood floors but if you dont have them anywhere else in your houe its going to look odd to just introduce them here.. I dont think ive provided you much help here.. but let us know what you finally go with. -------------------------------------------------------- Building in Highlands Craigieburn Status: Building the Laundryless 25.5: Slab Complete Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 33Mar 24, 2009 4:43 pm Michelle Option 1 is exactly how you would put it for that type of doorway. Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 34Mar 24, 2009 5:37 pm Hi Joles, I didn't vote for any options. But as for Option 1 being considered weird, I don't think so. Just try to picture yourself standing in the middle of that small area and look around. It actually complements the angles you already have with the walls and doors. It's just fine for your plan, and it wouldn't look odd as you think it does on the plan. Just go with any option YOU are happy with. Cheers... Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 35Mar 24, 2009 6:15 pm CarlousMoochous Although it also might help the kids keep thier toys out of the hallway, which will make it easier to keep the flow of the hall open. That is a good point, as that hallway is not going to be part of the room whether it is carpet or tiles.. So I think defining it as not part of the room is a great idea. It won't make the room smaller just defines where the playroom ends and where the hallway starts. Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 36Mar 24, 2009 6:27 pm I'm very confused still. I'm not too concerned about option 3 cutting down the size of the playroom. It's approx 4.7 metres width to the powder room wall. If I did go option 3 the carpetted area would still be 3.5m wide by 3.9 metres. I'm just worried too many tiles will make the house too cold. And I sook when I'm cold. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 37Mar 24, 2009 6:35 pm Someone said it's a good job we're all different and I agree.....because I'd carpet the whole hallway. I'm not totally convinced about tiles being easier to keep clean than carpet, particularly good quality wool carpet. I really like a demarcation between the bedroom area and the casual living area, rather than having the cut-off at individual rooms. And I am male...so What would I know about cleaning? Not much help, I know - sorry Cheers zeke Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 38Mar 24, 2009 6:39 pm You just need a good pair of uggies I voted Option 1 - mainly because I didn't like the idea of going from a bedroom to the bathroom in the middle of the night and getting cold feet.......then I realised that we are having a tiled hallway... so I guess option 3 is fine as well. Re: Where should the carpet and tiles meet? 39Mar 24, 2009 6:49 pm I have voted for Option 3, and offer the following suggestion I have in mind for my play area (one day on a Tuesday when built!) ... have the tiling in the hall, as well as around the border of the room (1 or 2 tiles width depending on size), then have a carpet square laid and fitted in the room like a large rug would fit. I love this look with tiles, and it gives you the option to replace the square if damaged. Hope this has been explained well enough. I know Jo K has carpet inlaid like that for her family room, with floorboards rather than tiles. Might check her thread. Thanks. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
