I'm just looking at my staircase here and the hand rail, post, and the big bit that runs along and joins into the plaster wall (sorry don't know the name) are all wood. I think the post being painted makes it hard. Sorry if I'm not helping. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Black on light wood does look good.
