Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 20, 2009 11:40 am Hello,
We've just spoken to our electrician this morning and got a quote for all the extra bits and pieces we want to add in. We plan on putting a few downlights around and he's quoted us: Light Point - Wire only $48.50 (per light) Fitting of down light $20.95 (per light) That's almost $70 per light to install and doesn't even include the fitting. Can that be right? Thanks for your help. Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 2Mar 20, 2009 11:50 am We were quoted a lot more than that to have downlights installed (did include fitting however) so decided to get them done after moving in. Also we didn't know where we would need lighting before the house was built.
So your price sounds reasonable to me. Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 3Mar 20, 2009 11:52 am sdabel So your price sounds reasonable to me. Bugger! Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 4Mar 20, 2009 12:04 pm Hi There,
We had our electrical appointment on wednesday. The builder quoted us $118 per down light with fittings. We decided to get it done after moving. It would also depend on how many down lights you wanted installed as if it wasnt too many it wouldnt be worth the headache to get 3rd party quotes. Land Settled 27/04/09. Site Started 30/4/09. Slab poured 21/5/09. Frame up 27/5/09. Building thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15699 Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 6Mar 20, 2009 12:12 pm that cheaper than ours .
Wiring for light point was $55 + $29 to install our own supplied lights. ( that was regarless if standard light or downlight) $75 wiring for external light + $29 install I never realised how dear it was. We are getting them to install about 70% of the lights and the rest they are just doing the wiring. We were advised by our helpful consultant that after handover a normal electrician ( not builder elec) will only charge about $10-15 to install if the wiring is already done. Maybe even cheaper. We're not having any downlights, so there's no problem with doing it this way. I'm sure I can get it done cheaper.
Judie Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 9Mar 22, 2009 10:20 pm Our electrician is charging us about $65 per light point, including installation (we supply the actual fittings)...and this is irrespective of what type of light fitting it is We're having a fair few downlights and also have a bit of a tricky layout, with a mix of downlights, pendants etc on raked ceilings - and possibly also ceiling fans - so we're pretty happy with what he's charging... Then of course there is the question of multiple switching etc which adds on to the costs pretty quick!!! The other reason we've gone with this particular sparky is that he is also able to undertake other cabling (data, audio, etc etc) which a few others wouldn't do. Not sure we'll get him to do that as well, but nice to have the option!! Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 10Mar 23, 2009 7:21 am Ours were $98 per downlight (installed) if that helps. C&G -------------------------------- A new building chapter begins.. Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 11Mar 23, 2009 9:31 am We were quoted $85 per standard light, no price for downlights though (didnt ask about either, just that was on the standard extras) Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 12Mar 23, 2009 10:41 am I think its great that you've been given the option of just running wires. We were quoted around $110 per downlight. Because it's something you can't do later on (ground floor of double story), they've really got you over a barrell. But, if they can run the wires for you, then you can buy the fittings for $10 each at Bunnings and connect them later, easy done. The fittings come with transformers as well. Can't go wrong. Good to know we're not too far off the norm, and he does seem like a very nice guy too. I've been studying at uni since 2005 and am now thinking of dumping that degree and becoming a sparky! OMG!!! Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 15Mar 23, 2009 3:28 pm a sparky wont be sitting at his desk surfing homeone right now ---->Some say that a recession is when your neighbour loses his/her job while a depression is when you lose yours!<----- Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 16Mar 23, 2009 10:21 pm We are quoted $113 per downlight by our builder, that includes installation. As a first home buyer, I thought its abit exy. But it is really nice tho! I love it Williams Landing Stage 10 - Kingwell Neighbourhood Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 17Mar 24, 2009 11:43 am Initially we wanted 40 downlights throughout the house and our builder quoted us $2800 (17 of which was part of a special promotion). Then we've successfully negotiated for 24 free downlights. Good deal to me! Karma - what goes around comes around sooner or later...... Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 18Mar 24, 2009 3:38 pm MeetricC0n charge $96 per downlight I got a quote outside certified electrician for $30 per light for labour and cable and for extra switch or dim light switch extra $25 Provide certificate but I have to supply or buy my own downlight. The question I want to know is For a single storey home will it look different or damage your home if you install downlight and switch like dim light switch or extra switch after completion of the house ???? Downlight is between $14 to $30 each Depend on the quality. Say I spend on the best quality light $30-$40 a light. Then total cost would only be $60 or $70 per light include installation I know that I can save at least $25-$30 per light but is it worth it??? Or what should I tell my builder so that when they run the cable it is downlight ready. Or something that I must be aware of Thanks Melbourne, Victoria My Journey, My Mistakes, My Issues and My Problems My Blog : http://homebuildingresource.blogspot.com/ Re: Electrical Quote - does this sound right? 19Mar 24, 2009 6:37 pm We had bayonet fittings installed wherever we wanted downlights. They cost us $20. Then i bought energy efficiant downlights for $20 each and the sparky is charging us $15 to install. So all up its $55 . Pretty happy with that as we have 40 downlights through the house. I guess the electrical might have been the only thing the builder didn't scr*w us on They using concrete or timber sleepers?
