It looks like everyone that has posted here is building in rural/acreage blocks? Any help would be much appreciated! Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 44Nov 03, 2009 6:48 pm Its been a while between posts, have been very busy building the shed. We are now just 16 days away from demolishing our house. We need to be moved in within 1 week. The skates are on. I was wondering how you all insulated your shed? did you put bats in and then insulation foil? or just bats? or just foil? did you do the walls and roof? or just the roof? or just walls? we do plan to have a air conditioner for cooling and a wood heater for winter Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 46Dec 24, 2009 9:22 am we have been in our shed for nearly a yr now while our house is being built ,we are on two & half acres shed is 15mtrs by 9 mtrs by 6mtrs at ridge with 4.2mtr walls We have 2 young daughters 3 dogs 2 horses and wish now we never even started our house, long story. We do have a pretty good shed though, upstairs where daughters live, downstairs ,sep bedroom, kitchen, lounge ,all lined with cell air ,evap aircon, 42 outside yesterday 24 in shed ,i kid you not.Rainwater tanks run toilet, shower no mains. We live in two thirds, other third is the boys shed.Big boys shed that is .Its been great ,just one thing though make sure you seal every little crack ,gap, hole etc etc ,cause if you dont every creature that used to live where you now live will now want to move back in with you Good luck and make the most out of every day ,cause you cant come back and do it again Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 48Dec 24, 2009 6:13 pm We have been living in the shed now for just over a month and the house came down last week. People are always amazed when I tell them where I live, I tell them it is better than the house we had. We attached vertical wood frame to horizontal steel frame, put in top quality insulation and then gyprocked it. We have an excellent airconditioner. It took us 5 months working only on weekends to complete it, just the two of us and neither of us are tradies. From our house we took the kitchen, power points, skirting boards, windows, TV ariel, curtains. All up whole project cost about $15K including relocation of meter box, electrical work, plumbing and some excavation. Equivalent of $300/wk rent and at the end we have an additional 65square meters of livable space which the builder would have charged a fortune to add onto the house. I'm even hosting Christmas lunch in the "Sh-ouse" tomorrow! 2011 Home Sweet Home Handover 03 September 2010 PCI 27August 2010 Plumber 20August 2010 Electrician 19August 2010 Painting 04 August 2010 Cabinets 13Jul2010 Lockup 23June Frame 20April slab 1Mar10 Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 49Dec 30, 2009 10:21 am Hi everyone - new to the forum which seems to be one of the better ones going around. My wife and I are planning on this also. Got an offer on a few acres and with a bit of luck in a few weeks we will be in business. I am very attracted to the living in the shed idea and judging by the responses to this post, it doesn't seem too difficult to cope with. My question relates to council regulations. I am in Victoria and when I spoke to the council (who were hopeless over the phone by the way) they told me that they do not allow people to live in their shed. So the options I guess are one of two: 1. Don't tell them 2. Put an old caravan next to the shed If I don't tell the council that I am planning on living in the shed, how do I explain the toilet, shower and kitchen? Any suggestions or experiences with councils that may be able to help? thanks alot. Andrew Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 50Dec 30, 2009 11:07 am I don't know much about this, but maybe call it a bungalow or granny flat or something instead of a shed? Louis Pasteur Vegie garden: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=27637&start=0 My Backyard Adventure Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 51Dec 30, 2009 12:00 pm I think the main concerns most councils have are the possibility of people living in substandard accommodation that doesn't meet basic health and safety requirements and the potential for the shed to provide illegal dual occupancy down the track. So, it's important to ensure that all relevant standards are met, especially re electrical, plumbing and fire safety and you need to have some use for the shed when your new home is completed that does not involve dual occupancy. Councils usually react to pressure (ie complaints). If the neighbours are cool with what you are doing (and it helps if they have done the same thing in the past) and it is left in no doubt that you are building a new home on the same property, my experience is that councils will "turn a blind eye." After the new home is completed and the shed becomes a large elaborate rumpus/hobby area, I think you are unlikely to run into any problems unless you do something silly like rent it out as a separate dwelling. It always pays to spell out all the details to insurance companies and answer any questions honestly so that the whole thing can't come back and bite you in the event of a claim. However, the actual occupancy is clearly flexible and the % of time actually living on site vs staying with friends or in holiday accommodation etc is an estimate only and can be "tailored" to a limited extent to what they want to hear. We were very nervous about doing the shed-dwelling thing at first. But it went so well that we wouldn't hesitate to do it again. And the savings on rent mean that the "shed" is now a cost-neutral bonus that we're very glad to have, especially when large groups of friends/rellies visit and/or stayover. Cheers zeke Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 52Dec 30, 2009 1:41 pm Thanks Zeke - might go with 'honesty is the best policy'. I will give the council another call and see what they say. Hopefully I will encounter someone that actually wants to help. The block we are looking to build on is part of the shire where some of the bushfires occurred and there are so many caravans and temp building about the place. The shed I am planning to build is better than the house I currently live in so hopefully it wont be a problem. Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 53Dec 31, 2009 12:28 pm ok so I called the council today and they were pretty helpful. I was completely upfront and told them I wanted to build a garage to live in whilst the build was underway. They said that it is not something that they encourage, but it is possible. I would need to include the intention to live in the garage as part of the permit application process and once the house is complete and ready to move in, the garage will be decommisioned for occupancy. Sounds ok. She suggested that I complete a pre-application meeting request form so that I can meet with the council onsite to discuss my plans before buying the land. I will also need a land management plan that articulates how I plan to manage the conservation overlay on the block as well as a net gain report concerning the clearing of trees - I guess this basically means how I plan to replace any trees I cut down. Has anyone had any experience with a land management plan or net gain report? Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 55Sep 14, 2010 9:26 pm I am just putting a contract on a 1500m square block in the country and looking at living options if I sell my house. I have found this shed to buy for about $6000 not delivered, but wondering how much for tradies to lay cement and install. I would be happy to use a portable toilet and camping supplies. Shower maybe I could work a camping shower in too.... I could look at the cost of getting power turned on. I would like to get something installed and ready to live in under $10,000 if possible as that is the amount I will be looking at spending if I have to rent for 12 months whilst I organise and build either a transportable or kit home. This is the shed with a sliding door and a window 6m x 6m. I guess as it is just me I could even just partition off an area for the shower and toilet fairly easily and cheaply Re: Living in a Shed During Construction? 56Mar 30, 2012 11:11 am i have got his issue now too. i went on holiday for 2 months with the paln to have the permit done and a bungalow built in my absence. i am living in my shed now because the Building Surveyor couldn't/wouldn't do the permit in the 2 months. the shed is is temporary site shed, this requires no permit i am told. living in it is probably a difeerent issue. so today 2 council health officers arrived to investigate. they say they wil have to report it to the planning dept. i am in Ocean Grove Vic, under Greater Geelong City Council. so now i need to know what is legal and what is not. anyone know the law about this? there is a fight coming on i know. like is a caravan legal? if so why not a shed? i think there must be State law that says something about a land owners rights, that is its not simply all up to the local Council and arbitrary rules. need help!!! thanks Living in a Shed During Construction? 58Feb 14, 2016 8:06 pm We are living in our shed right now while we are building the house. The shed is 6 x 12 but we insulated a part of it (6 x 4.5 for the room that we are using as bedroom/kitchen/lounge and 2.5 x 1.8 for the little ensuite). We cook using a single butane cooker that you can store in one of the kitchen drawers. Not ideal but we open the door while cooking and light an incense stick after and the smell is gone. We use the little dish drainer set that you get from ikea. We have a queen bed. We are comfortable and we are ok with it. We have our fridges, microwave, pantry, wardrobes in the uninsulated part of the shed (apart from it being our storage). The space will be back to being a bar after. Here is a picture of our shed. The first door on the left is the way to the rest of the shed, the next door is to the ensuite. You can see the house that we are currently building at the front. Our washing machine is outside and we just cover it with a tarp. Our dryer is in another smaller shed on the other end. We have gas cylinder for hot water for in the shed only. The house will be a different story. We will have solar hot water with electric backup. Were they happy with it all? Living in a Shed During Construction? 60Feb 15, 2016 10:42 am Hi Sloppy. It was fine cos we put in plans for the house at the same time. ie they know that we are building and the space will only be used temporarily. As for me personally, as much as it is a nice room (ie this room is way better than the apartment that I used to stay in Adelaide), I am looking forward to have the house built and be able to move in it. It's good that my partner and I do not dislike each other! Lol.
