Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 21, 2009 9:49 pm Just been browsing the forum and read that a lot of people get and recommend an independent building inspection. At what stage is it best to get an inspection? Is it best to get more than one inspection done before handover? What do people do? How much approx are inspections each? Do you need special permission to do this? Do you need some sort of agreement from the builder in writing that will allow this? Thanks everyone Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: When to get an independent inspection? 2Jul 21, 2009 10:22 pm Depending on how much money you have you can (should?) have multiple inspections at various stages. I guess it all comes down to how much risk you're willing to take. Common ones are frame, lockup and handover but many people also suggest pre-slab and pre-plaster. I've seen costs ranging around $400 to $500 per inspection. Depending on the size of your house. I don't think you need permission. I pay; So I say. You'll need to organize site access with your builder ahead of time. Trying this building gig one more time. Re: When to get an independent inspection? 3Jul 21, 2009 10:30 pm We have almost missed frame as things are happening so quick but I'd go along with the same as suggested. good idea to have an inspection in there before particular stages are covered over so to speak. Frame is a good one to iron out any possible structural issues that could be transformed to the eye with a nice sheet of gyprock. Re: When to get an independent inspection? 5Jul 22, 2009 1:22 pm We did it at pre gyprock stage. Inspector didn't find any major issues but at least the builder knows that someone else, who knows about the building, will be looking! We are planning to do it again before handover.
