Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 13, 2009 12:35 pm We are building our first home and wanted to know at what stage do we need to contact Telstra for pre-wiring?
Does anyone know how the prewiring is actually done ? can we do it after the home is built ? does it involve much of re-work if it could not done at the time of construction? Re: Telstra pre-wiring 2Mar 13, 2009 12:39 pm you need to get it done before the bricks and plaster go up..
as we found out.. -Sha Re: Telstra pre-wiring 3Mar 13, 2009 1:06 pm If all else fails call them as early as possible and ask when they need to know.
That way its never too late, they will just say call back at X stage Re: Telstra pre-wiring 4Mar 13, 2009 1:10 pm Do the builders tell you to get it done and add in the costs? Or is it something that you have to arrange yourself? Re: Telstra pre-wiring 5Mar 13, 2009 1:24 pm builder will normally do it.. Telstra don't need to do it..
Builder should put in a telstra conduit when doing the electricity run with a draw string. And wire the phone point in the house to near the meter box. And then when you move in call Telstra. They will run the copper (or optic fibre in my case) from the pit to the box on the wall through the conduit and connect it to your prewire to your phone points. Re: Telstra pre-wiring 6Mar 13, 2009 1:31 pm The builder did sent me a letter after the frame stage and advised to call Telstra. I called Telstra 4 weeks back and thay still havent given me any contractor name. I am not sure if Telstra can do pre-wiring even after the bricks and plaster is done. Re: Telstra pre-wiring 7Mar 13, 2009 1:32 pm I think this is what I'm paying my builder to do: $250 for the underground telephone connection and then 3 phone points for about $375 It's one of those things that I would prefer to not have to worry about! I'm waiting to hear back.
Can you put the phone lines in with the power cable to the electricity pit, or does it need to go in a seperate pit? I have no idea! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! This includes laying the conduit & cable in the trench.
This $299 paid to telstra DOESN'T include trenching costs. Our builder wanted to sting us $300 to put the conduit in from the road to our home. If we went ahead with this we would have had to pay $599. $300 to our builder & $299 to Telstra. When I asked him were does the conduit go? do you need a new trench? His response was, 'Oh no, no new trenches, we put it in the same trench as the electric!' So it's like, $300 for what? A 5 metre piece of conduit worth $20 and a drawstring which Telstra will do as part of their $299 connection fee. I decided that rather than give my builder $300 for his back pocket for doing Sweet F.A. that after handover, I would dig the 5 metre trench required at the minimum 40cm deep in a few short hours, The alternativ for me would be to work 2 x 8 hour shifts at work after tax to pay for the $300. We have good soil which is fairly easy to dig. It's best to figure out if it's worth it or not to either pay the builder or dig the trench out yourself. The telephone conduit is white & electric conduit is orange. They can both go in the same trench as long as they are in these seperate conduits. Re: Telstra pre-wiring 11Mar 13, 2009 2:01 pm I would rather spend $300 then spend 3 hours digging a trench!!
But our Telstra conduit was done as per our standard inclusions. The electricity run is included and they do the Telstra one at the same time. So didn't cost any extra. You still need to get the copper connected to the house. I'm not sure on how they structure their fees and charges, but you would need them to at least run the copper connection from the street. wakeboardandy I would rather spend $300 then spend 3 hours digging a trench!! +1 to that!! Especially seeing as if I spent a few hours digging a trench, I would then be spending a LOT more money with the physio as I am pretty sure I would flare up my back injury!
