Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 13, 2009 8:55 am Hi all!
I'm just curious as to how much people have haggled with their builders? Obviously when a builder gives you a quote they are not instantly dropping their pants. so I'm just wondering how successful people have been at getting discount, freebies thrown in, builders to lower original quote, etc, etc. Also, how much profit is a builder making when building a new home? I'm no expert, but I think they would have alot of room to move. This is all important stuff, I would love to hear your stories! Cheers! Re: How much can you haggle with a builder? 2Mar 13, 2009 9:23 am ^^ Most people are saying that they make little on the base price and allot on the extras.
For us, we really havent haggled much because our builder has been very accommodating. We changed heaps of stuff and still it was a few thousand more, really not much considering we moved about 3 walls, changed a front corner from going in to going out, etc. The only 'expensive' item we added was an Alfresco area costing ~$5000 IIRC. But that includes being in the roof line, tiles, lights, etc. But, for stuff you can cheaply add later check prices. Their dishwasher as an addon doesnt look that good and is expensive, but they will plumb for a dish washer regardless, so we will buy one and put it in ourselves. Re: How much can you haggle with a builder? 3Mar 13, 2009 9:45 am Have a bit of a look around the the forum, there have been plenty of discussions over the last couple of months regarding builder margins and customer ability to haggle and what people have successfully haggled on. We have haggled with the builder, but we had the feeling that he had overcharged somewhere else, so it was not very productive. We did get some reductions after negotiations and it is ok as long as you take the softly softly approach. It is hard to judge at times but trying will not hurt anyone, builders are big people they probably have seen quite a bit. Hope it works for you T Re: How much can you haggle with a builder? 6Mar 16, 2009 10:05 pm this was discussed at length recently
