Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Side of house alresco area, which way does yours face? 41Mar 17, 2009 3:10 pm I'm with Helyn, south-facing might work in a hot climate. It depends on the prevailing winds too though, and what time of day you're most likely to use it.
I'd never even consider a south-facing outdoor living area in Melbourne. I already know it doesn't work, after having to endure it in the place we were renting. Summer or winter, it got very little use, except to store stuff that then got covered with dust that the horrible wind blew in. I still haven't managed to get the fabric on our chairs clean... I think they're going to have to be replaced. Our al fresco room faces NNE, exactly like our old (1987 - is that better or worse than 1993?) pergola-covered deck. We know it works, but it took a bit of searching to find the right block that would allow us to have it. I've seen some display homes with 2 alfresco's, one on each side of the house, even in Melbourne I think a south facing one could be a good thing if you could screen it from the wind, it could be turned into a fern-type oasis to escape the heat in summer. Remember, Melbourne is warmer and drier on average than say Sydney in summer, a mini temperate (not tropical) rainforest will thrive there! Re: Side of house alresco area, which way does yours face? 45Mar 18, 2009 1:16 pm Our side alfresco will be North facing. We flipped the plan to get this as people advised this would be the best direction for it. Our back yard will be West facing. We're building in Melbourne.
