Am now 46 and doing my first build. Advice to younger ones is to start at the lower end with lower repayments and work your way up to being mortgage free whilst still having spare cash to enjoy and not have to worry about where the next mortgage repayment is coming from!! Re: How old were you when... 76May 04, 2009 11:56 am klscomps that is very good advice that is exactly what we did the reason we have only build a new house now.I found when working in real estate many people budget for the mortage but forget all the other bills that came with owning a home finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: How old were you when... 77May 04, 2009 1:06 pm That is really good advice. Especially for those younger couples who are married or getting married, think about how you'll manage your repayments and expenses if and when you decide to start a family. I have friends who also built their own homes at the same time as me and one friend went the full upgrade on everything and spent over $30 000 at pre-start. Her house is lovely and does have all the top of the range products and features, but I know their house cost a lot. Only months after moving into the house she gave birth to their first baby, they hadn't planned on starting a family so early so for the current time the only source of income is coming from her husband. I don't expect my first home to be my dream home. It's nice and there are some upgrades, but I really did not want to spend too much. As it is, I bought my block in 2007 when prices were higher and I was not eligible for the FHOG so I was already spending more than other people I knew. Re: How old were you when... 79May 04, 2009 2:29 pm Here's an oldster story for all you kids out there Bought first home in 1973- I was 24, she was 22, I think we paid about $25000 in western Sydney. It lasted till 1977 and the divorce. Married SWMBO and bought 2nd home in 1980 - this time it cost $73000 in The Shire. We built an extension on it when SWMBO was pregnant with DD. Moved to current location in 2002 not far from previous address which we sold for about 850% more than we paid for it - and our old house was knocked down and replaced by a Clarendon Ballina straight after we sold it. That property sold again 5 years later for twice what we sold it for. We bought SWMBO's parents' home when they moved to a retirement village - then when we couldn't figure out how to extend the house to get what we wanted, we embarked on our first and probably last building project. It's in this thread. Built the C£arend0n Cambridge: Moved in. Happy campers. Here's our story on HomeOne I might be old, but I have no trouble finishing my... er...
