But I was 24 when we bought our first home, husband was 23. We're so boring we lived there for 22 years. Wait, was it 23? *counts on fingers* Hmm, that still doesn't add up to my age.... my lack of numeric skills must be dementia due to my advanced age. Re: How old were you when... 43Mar 06, 2009 7:15 pm well not only did we go an build our 2nd house less than 4 years after buying our first place at 22 1/2 later at about hmm 26? we are now rebuilding it again. 21+ years later ( well it will be by the time we move in) . with a few updates and additions but it's pretty much the same house. Does that mean we were really mature? or just that we are dead boring or just sticking with a formula that works for us? Re: How old were you when... 45Mar 06, 2009 7:44 pm I was 22 and DH was 21 when we built our 1st house
We lived there for 6 yrs...paid it off, then bought an acerage, stayed there for 10 yrs and sold that to build the house that we are about to move into tomorrow We are both 40 Wow...where did that time go But as someone mentioned....land was cheaper in the 90,s...I think we paid $14,000 for our 1/4 acre block (DH paid cash for it!) Cheers Mel Building on 9 acres Re: How old were you when... 46Mar 06, 2009 8:39 pm I was 23 when I built/owned my first home with my ex husband. It was in Qld and only cost $145,000 for 23 squares on 700m.
Those were the days, and now I'm about to build my 4th house and we are paying more than that just for the land Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. We left it to later because we wanted to get married and have kiddies first. Re: How old were you when... 48Mar 07, 2009 9:15 am I was 26 and partner was 23 when we built our first house. Hubby got the land just before we were married in '92 and it only cost 10,500 for 5 acres in a small country town. Mind you, the interest rates were at 20% back then. So we HAD to build. It was cheaper than paying rent and paying a land loan. We have sold and purchased other houses in the mean time as well , built for the 2nd time in 2004. This is our third build and we now are 36 and 38. Hopefully this will be our last move for a LONG time!! Built a modified "Daydream 279" .. Cor@l Homes on a flat 4473m block!! And lov'n it!!! Re: How old were you when... 51Mar 08, 2009 8:07 am DW and I, (before she was DW that is,) bought our first house when we were 21. There was no FHOG but there was an assistance scheme that regularly put money into our bank account for the first couple of years. First Home Owners Scheme perhaps? We also got a stamp-duty rebate, but it was only worth about $850 from memory. Interest rates started at 11.5%, and when they rose rapidly after that, existing borrowers such as us had the luxury of a capped rate of 13.5%.
There was never a possibility of actually building our first home. There you go, I am officially one of the 'oldies'! Re: How old were you when... 53Mar 08, 2009 11:21 pm OK. So I'm one of the 2 that answered 45+. This will be our first house that we own. Unfortunately, due to the way it's been financed, we are not eligible for the FHOG. We're still looking forward to it though.
Judie Re: How old were you when... 54Mar 08, 2009 11:26 pm Both my partner and myself are 24 this year and our land is settling next month (hopefully).
And we are planning to start building in July this year =) We are very excited about it. Williams Landing Stage 10 - Kingwell Neighbourhood Re: How old were you when... 55Mar 09, 2009 1:53 am My wife and I are just over the 50 mark and are buying for the first time.
We lived for part of our lives in Europe where it is not common to buy - almost everyone rents. But, the laws over there protect renters in a way that would be a revelation to most Ozzies. For example, the government set the maximum rent increases and these always stayed lower than the inflation rate. The right to rent an apartment is inherited by the children when the parent died and so on. Oh yes, and after five years of living in an apartment, you have the right to remain their permanently. So different to here, where, for example, we had the owner of one house we rented kick us out by the day after Christmas, supposedly on the grounds that they were returning to occupy the house. Strangely, the house remained vacant for a long period after that. So this is all very new and exciting for us, and is driven by the determination to own our house by retirement age so that we don't have to pay rent. We also look forward to being able to do what we like with the house we live in, and to have visits by the estate agent forever behind us. After the last visit ('Tell us all the needs doing around the house.') nothing was done on the list of things that needed doing. Our one consolation? The master suite shower clearly has waterproof problems which we have now drawn to their attention twice and it has not been rectified. I suspect that timber is rotting so they will be up for a big repair bill due to their negligence. Re: How old were you when... 56Mar 09, 2009 12:06 pm I was 23 when I built my first home with my first husband.
Now I am building my last home with my last husband! (Fingers crossed on both accounts ) Cheers, Dee ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our BLOG: http://buildingourdreams.blogspot.com/ Building the 'DEE 257.9' Contract signed 08/09/08. Golden oldies! 57Mar 09, 2009 1:30 pm Pinkfairymagic, We built our first home when we were both under 25 - the builder sketched a plan on the footpath with a sharp rock and we said That'll do! - and lived in that home for 33 years, with many changes during that time. Now we've sold and are building again - and it's a very different experience to the first time (this time we are agonising over every little detail!) Lots of fun and enjoying the whole thing. Our new home is in a new estate, and thanks to the FHOG our new neighbours will all be young people, and we're fine with that as we get along great with the younger generation. I know you wanted to know about first-time builders, but really after such a long time, this feels like our first time!
