Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 26, 2009 11:46 am Because last night someone tried to break into our house and the only way i knew that.. was because i was ****** in bed and could see and hear them trying to get in through the front door.
Thank god we are moving out in 2 weeks.. Definately doesn't make me feel any safer going on a holiday and leaving our stuff available for someone to take for 10 days. What happened? Did you go and confront them? Call the police? Turn on a light? How scary for you!! I'm glad you and your home are safe My karma ran over your dogma Re: Why I like Master Bedrooms at the front of the house.. 5Feb 26, 2009 12:32 pm Back doors are generally harder to get to, as they are at the back of the house.
A good way to stop these sort of attempts is to have a light out the front thats turned on by movement. That way, as soon as they walk towards your house a good light comes on, and they will just walk away. Why? who wants to be under a bright light trying to get in the door? its a little too obvious... Re: Why I like Master Bedrooms at the front of the house.. 6Feb 26, 2009 12:36 pm Thanks Hawgyl.
Unfortunately Hellman, we don't have a sensor light and it's a rental property so we didn't want to install one. But sensor lights are a good idea. We are in a court location though.. and there is a streetlight out the front which was how i sore shadows coming to the front door. Its pretty visible from the court.. but not many people in the court at 12.15am at night. I was in bed trying to sleep and my Partner was in the study at the back of the house. Our bedroom window is right near the front door and I can always tell when my partner comes home cause you can see his shadow through the vertical blinds and hear him opening the front door.. only this time somebody else came up and tried to get into our house. Frightening. Thank god the door was locked.. which it normally isn't cause i don't really think someones gonna try and get in! So i scream for my partner and we have a look out the blinds and i see someone running down our driveway and then he hides in our next door neighbours garden next to the fence and eventually jumps on his pushbike and rides off. My partner goes outside, tells me to lock the doors and jumps in the car.. he gets to two houses down and theres people outside so he stops to ask them if they had someone try and get in.. to which they say it was just their brother.. and he's off his head and drunk and he reckons he might have just been lost and he asks us to not call the cops because they have already dealt with enough ****. Im watching this through the blinds ready to call 000 if they try and attack my partner in his car but they dont and he just comes back and tells me what they said. They have been in trouble before and we have seen a whole heap of undercover cop cars at there house before. I did not sleep last night. We called the local Police station.. but they said if we wanted to report it, they'll have to go around there and talk to them.. and we didn't wanna do that cause then they'd know it was us that called them and cause we are going away soon.. we don't want to get back and find all our stuff messed up. I'm just glad were moving in a couple of weeks. =( MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS LOCK YOU DOORS. Building with PD - Regent 23 Cascades on Clyde Estate HomeOne Building Thread - PCI Completed - 28th August. One thing I am actually really worried about once I'm in my house is having empty blocks next door and where my block is situated in the estate the block to one side and behind are in a different stage so they will be empty for some time. I'm going to be getting bits of wood to "lock" the sliding windows shut and maybe even for the laundry and family room sliding doors too 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' And the house behind us is completed too. So hopefully we'll have quite a few neighbours in around us. Next doors house was a diferent stage to us.. so one half of the street is pretty complete and the other half will start going up now. But yes, the wood in the windows is a good idea and just be aware of whats around you. I think it also helps if your in a 'better' area. The rental property were in at the moment is okay.. except for the neighbours 3 doors down who have obviously had many a run ins with the law before. Im keeping my fingers crossed we wont have those type of people in the new estate. Building with PD - Regent 23 Cascades on Clyde Estate HomeOne Building Thread - PCI Completed - 28th August. I'm glad you are okay but you really should lock all your doors especially at night. I keep mine locked 24/7. A friend of mine was raped during a daytime break in. He came in through the front door like he owned the place and she was pregnant at the time. You can never be too careful. This has definately opened my eyes. I am truly shocked there are such monsters out their that do these kinds of things, especially in the case of your friend. Horrible. I'm one of those people too - the last one roaming around the house at night closing windows and locking doors. My family doesn't understand the concept of risk. Lucky the new house is on a main road, fully built up around us, and there are only one side entrance that has to go by the main bedroom first. Re: Why I like Master Bedrooms at the front of the house.. 12Feb 26, 2009 1:09 pm Yep it was but it certainly made me re-think our security. My friend lived in a very nice suburb too so it can happen anywhere. I've always had children in the house so another reason for me to keep the house safe and them in. I check all my doors and windows everynight, two or three times when DH is away plus we have an alarm and window locks. It would totally freak me out to hear someone trying to come in. Re: Why I like Master Bedrooms at the front of the house.. 16Feb 26, 2009 2:25 pm How scary for you erinleigh. I have always had this plan if anyone tried to get into my bedroom window (I just always figure this is where they would get in) I would put my face right up to theirs and scream GET OUT OF HERE, I reckon it could scare the living *cough* out of them…..and I can imagine me doing that in my state of sheer terror
HTB….what a horrible story about your friend. I used to leave my garage door up all day when I was home, not anymore, I don’t believe any of us are untouchable. There are too many weirdos out there. I'm just happy to hear that you had the front door locked.... Good idea too about not reporting it to the police if they know it's you - they probably would do something.... Geez after hearing all those stories I'm glad I always lock doors no matter what (even myself out at times... ) Re: Why I like Master Bedrooms at the front of the house.. 19Feb 26, 2009 3:33 pm erinleigh Lam I like the idea of security doors, but my wife won't have a bar of it. I have always lived with security doors and quite like them, especially during summer when you can have the breeze go through the locked door. But, we are not having them on our new house, we have double front doors and I love the look The windows will have to do for the breeze! In Brisbane we had security screens on all windows as well. We would open our windows in Sept and close them in April - unless there was a thunder storm. You don't see that here in Melbourne.
