Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 24, 2009 3:25 pm Hi everyone,
I have just discovered this forum today and am looking forward to some feedback! We bought an old weatherboard house in Adelaide just over a year ago on a decent size block which we are knocking down shortly and splitting the block down the middle. We are part way through the process and will eventually be left with 2 blocks at 9.6m x 42.5m. We are taking our time with this project so we have still not decided on whether we will go through a builder or my carpenter partner will be owner-builder (thats a whole other issue!), so we have not decided on our plans as yet. Basically, im just looking for any suggestions on building on a long, narrow block! We really want an open living/kitchen/dining at the back of the house with alfresco and 3 bedrooms with possibly a study. Other than that we are fairly open minded. We will live in one for a little while but will eventually be renting both properties out. Although they are narrow blocks, we want the properties to look more like 2 seperate villas/houses rather than detached. Let me know your thoughts! Re: The adventures of a long, narrow block.. 2Feb 24, 2009 4:28 pm Good luck! We've just finished on a 10.7m x 45m block in suburban Melbourne. Here are a couple of threads on it:

I know its tricky finding a volume builder that does narrow blocks, so you may need a custom design - although ours is a volume builder... I guess God didn't use subbies... We did consider building a double story but as we are building to eventually rent the properties out we decided it wasnt worth spending the extra money. dimensions on your original plan are inconsistent and with accurate dimensions (including site plan, upstairs and down) i could make a proper scale drawing with furniture… 3 6196 Thanks again for this information. If you do hear anything different, would be great to know 4 5981 Thanks NativeZen! I can't wait to start landscaping, though it's going to be a while away yet. No movement on site yet as of the weekend. Hoping to see some earthworks… 3 2147 |
