Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 24, 2009 12:26 pm For those building with PD did anyone else think there is not a very wide selection of interior colours to chose from?
We have been given the Wattyl brochure and i thought there would be more choice! What colours have other people chosen for their walls and trims and are you happy with the colours once they have been painted on? Re: Building with PD - Interior Colour Selection 2Feb 24, 2009 12:37 pm We were told we could have any Wattyl colour we liked - so you're not restricted to those in the brochure. I went to the local Wattyl trade centre and got a colour chart that had at least 300 colours on it.
Check with your CSC whether there are restrictions - we were told we could only choose colours with a white base (they're marked in the brochure with the code WH). I was difficult and didn't like any of those for our wall colours, so we chose darker shades and paid to upgrade. We actually upgraded all our wall paint to Wattyl ID. Then we upgraded the ceiling to a "feature colour" because we didn't want white....I chose Bone. THEN we upgraded bathrooms to another "feature colour" because I'm a total PITA. What colours were you thinking of in general? Somebody here might be able to suggest some specific colours that you might like. Re: Building with PD - Interior Colour Selection 3Feb 24, 2009 12:42 pm We just want a slightly off white colour so I'm sure we will find one if we can have any Wattyl colour! I was under the impression it had to be from the original brochure but I will get another Wattyl one and chose from there.
Just wondering how much it cost to upgrade to I.D? I don't really want trade paint and I know that I.D is their quality stuff! Re: Building with PD - Interior Colour Selection 4Feb 24, 2009 1:16 pm We paid $1619 for Wattyl ID - that was one coat of undercoat and two of topcoat. You need to check for your own house though - we built a Prestige home, single storey, 35 squares, 2700mm ceilings, and that price was back in October 2007.
So depending on which division you're building with, the size of the house and allowing for any price rises since our contract, it could be more or less for you. I wouldn't bet on less.... There are lots of off-whites. Bone is nice - nobody ever notices that our ceilings aren't white, it just gives off a nice warmth. Check out a few of these too: Chalkdust Winter sky Purest White (it's not... Our charges for upgrading to 'chalkdust' which is a white colour in ID paint were $1600 and an additional $750 to upgrade the gloss on trims to ID too. Hope that gives you an idea. Is that lifestyle or prestige? Re: Building with PD - Interior Colour Selection 7Feb 24, 2009 6:09 pm We are building an access house, 24 squares so it should be a little bit cheaper. I will ask our sales consultant. I also went to the local paint place and picked up a whole lot of Wattyl colours so I'm sure we will be able to pick one from the stack! Thanks guys Re: Building with PD - Interior Colour Selection 9Feb 25, 2009 3:30 pm Georgie - which house are you building? I'm building the PD Access Regent 21 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Louis Pasteur Vegie garden: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=27637&start=0 My Backyard Adventure Re: Building with PD - Interior Colour Selection 10Feb 25, 2009 7:51 pm We had the same problem a few weeks ago. Initially, we were told by Hopetoun that we could choose 'any Wattyl colours from their whole interior range', and we misplaced the godawful Finishing Touches brochure so we wandered over to Wattyl on Whitehorse Rd Mitcham and grabbed chips that were from the ID range, not realising that we'd actually get hosed to the point we got hosed...
Anyway, we ended up changing our base wall colour to Vanilla Cream (ID colour), and all of our feature walls to ID colours as well. Our CC tried to convince us that New Vanilla Cream in Finishing Touches was the same, and it was very much not. New Vanilla Cream looked dirty rather than fresh. For some reason we were steamrolled into selecting one of their barely white off-whites from Finishing Touches for doors and skirtings... Not sure why. We weren't allowed basic whites apparently. So while we wanted white they're done in something beige-ish that was the lightest in the Finishing Touches. I think realistically PD knows the colours are horrible in Finishing Touches and that no one wants them, which is why they make people upgrade to ID to suffer the price of it. I am not sure what upgrading our base wall colour cost (not written in our contract... hm), but we got charged for each feature wall the price of doing a feature plus the price of upgrading the paint. The wall spaces were relatively small but this was still about $800 for four walls. So yes, you can have ID, but be prepared that you will have to pay for it and that they may argue with you about it anyway. And don't go to Bunnings to get Wattyl chips... they don't stock Wattyl anymore. lazy i'm a little confused ... are you saying if you pick any colour that isn't in the finishing touches brochure you HAVE TO upgrade to ID? Re: Building with PD - Interior Colour Selection 12Feb 25, 2009 10:00 pm Georgie,
What we ended up being told on the day of our colour selection appointment was that we were only supposed to have chosen from the Finishing Touches booklet, which is what's in the PD pack you receive when you first give them $1K and pick the block & house (that two page thing). To use a colour from Wattyl's ID (Interior Design) range rather than something in the Finishing Touches booklet, it does count as an upgrade. Over large areas, this does add up. Our CC was surprised we wanted to upgrade, I suppose because we are building a Smart Living house she thought we'd want to economise as much as possible, but I thought the FT colours were boring where ID were vibrant and there was simply a larger section to boot. As you can see from other posters they have had the same thing happen--they had to pay the extra amount to use something from ID. If you don't want to pay the amount which is the difference between what FT costs for PD to what ID costs, you just use the FT colours, and you won't get charged any extra.
