Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 22, 2009 3:24 pm Hi
We are currently thinking of doing our tiles after handover( The builder does the wet areas - bathrooms and laundry Bathroom/laundry would be ceramic other areas would be porcelain - so colours would be different There are a few places where the 2 different tiles would meet Has anyone done this - any photos and ideas pls also for people in melbourne we visited this place called www.granito.com.au Seemed reasonable for the porcelain tiles Anyone used their tiles or heard about them Re: Tiling after handover 2Feb 22, 2009 4:08 pm Haven't heard about that company.
Today we were out at Mt Martha display homes and one of them (cant remember but there are only 6), had two different tiles meeting at the bathroom and they were different shades of brown. I have to say I did not like the look at all. I would be very wary of doing this as if not done well can look really bad. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Tiling after handover 3Feb 23, 2009 7:35 am Thanks ICK - Will remember what u said
But we really want to go porcelain tiles and dont want to do the wet areas ourselves and we dont want the polished porcelin in bathrooms because it could get slippy Has anyone done this - tiling aftter hand over I remember reading that someone else on the forum doing this - cannot remember whom though - tiling after handover - any info please - Thanks Re: Tiling after handover 4Feb 23, 2009 8:31 am There's nothing wrong with 2 different tiles meeting ie between living areas & powder rooms/laundries, but 2 different tiles in one area? Is that what you mean ?
Our builder was to tile the main living areas excluding the dining area, which we would do after handover. All that we needed to do was to order extra of the same tiles from the builder's tiler (for the dining area) & get the tiler to come back after handover to lay them for cash. No probs. The reason why we decided against this was because no matter how good the tiler was, we'd see where he finished pre-handover & where he'd started post-handover, particulary if we didn't get the same tiler. So we're having the whole lot done by the builder. the porcelain are a bit harder to lay yourself and more time is required to get them level and you need to use the right glue etc etc. they have no bevelled edge so errors stick out more (or is that stick up more) cheers Re: Tiling after handover 6Feb 23, 2009 9:03 am Quote: There's nothing wrong with 2 different tiles meeting ie between living areas & powder rooms/laundries, but 2 different tiles in one area? Confused Is that what you mean ? Southies - Nope they are not in the same area - Powder room and laundry and bathrooms the builders would do Entry, family and kitchen and meals and upstairs living we want to do it after handover The tiles we really like is from a different supplier to what the builder uses Re: Tiling after handover 7Feb 23, 2009 9:05 am dinga i have polished porcelain in the bathrooms and they are not slippery, We've got them throughout our d/stairs living areas & they are slippery only when wet & when we walk around the house in socks . We have had a couple of adults slip & fall on the wet tiles, so one has to be careful obviously. From my experience living with them (rental) I would never have them, particularly in wet areas. But that's my situation only. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Tiling after handover 8Feb 23, 2009 1:54 pm beegeers,
we had that dilemma when we were building. we found this very beautiful porcelain tiles in another tile store and really wanted to lay that on the ground floor of our house. problem was, our builder was supposed to do the tiling of all wet areas. i even had a thread about it, asking people of their ideas about two different tiles for our ground floor area (powder room would be tiled by our builder). what we did was to ask the builder to exclude the tiling of wet areas downstairs and do the upstairs wet areas only. then, we tiled the whole ground floor (excluding study and HT) after handover, using that porcelain tile. upstairs, our builder laid a different porcelain tiles. so my suggestion is, if you really like another porcelain tile that is outside the builder's range, then do all tiling after handover. this would mean though that you have to sign a waiver so your builder could apply for the Cert of Occupancy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Tiling after handover 9Feb 23, 2009 6:16 pm We will be having a similar situation as you, with the Wet area tiles not exactly matching the main area tiles. We went to a few tile shops and came up with the idea of putting a pattern tile in to join then, something like a pebble tile or the little glass square ones that you see everywhere now. Polished porcelain seems slippery to us esp for bathrooms But is it comes to it we may do the same as you did. So the waive is for occupancy certificate - Anything else that would need to do? raw29983 - Thanks for that idea -Never thought of it - Would go back this week to see if we can get something Looking to tile the facade pillars rather than rendering. Builder is quoting 2500$ laying cost for upto 10msq. The 2 pillars come to be 16msq. So laying costs are 5000$… 0 3978 Hi, I'm clearing the tiles from our horrid 50 year old bathroom and preparing to lay new ones.
